The Audubon Zoo is one of the nation's best and a beautiful place to walk. The zoo was mostly spared from Katrina's wrath as it sits on the highest land in the city. In addition to the usual suspects of the animal world, it showcases the wildlife of Louisiana's swamps and bayous. There's plenty here for adults as well as children.

Kids who like trains will probably love a ride on the historic St. Charles streetcar line, which takes you to within an fairly easy walk through the park to the zoo.

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is back and the Audubon Institute recently opened the Insectarium.   The Louisiana Children's Museum is nearby in the warehouse district.  All three of these attractions are within walking distance of the French Quarter.
