On one aspect, you have the rich historical influences of East African heritage. There are a lot of ancient traditions and customs that still exhist today in Malindi. As was the case back before the town was even founded, fishing, hunting, and agriculture are still a big part of Malindi's backbone. There are also traces of influence from the Arabs. Much of the society and hierarchy of Malindi was shaped by the Arabs, and their influences are still felt in the area today. There are also rootes from Europeans visitors. Though the Portuguese set up shop in Malindi and had great influence in the area, they weren't the only country to assert their dominance. Through Imperialism, many different European nations brought travelers to the area. British, French, and German visitors were among some of those who came to the town and brought their own beliefs and customs. Because of all this mingling, today the town has a very unique culture. The town now relies heavily on its tourism. Much of this tourism is brought on by deep sea fishing and safaris. They are a very big deal in Malindi.
