Be aware that South Africa is a high crime society, starting at the point of entry O R Tambo International. Keep your luggage secure, there are many thieves within the terminal building who are always on the lookout for easy pickings. If you are going to hire a car and do a bit of travelling get a Garmin Navigator to help with navigation (Plan your trip before you arrive). Hijacking is a big problem in the major centres so when you stop at a traffic light or in traffic always leave a bit of space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Keep to the major attractions and never leave your important documents (passports etc) in the car when unattended. Get a local sim card for your phone and load emergency numbers - you may need them. Don't flash cash - it is not a good idea - rather carry master/visa card. Avoid entering townships - they are not safe areas to visit - if you do want to go into a township join an organised tour group. Do not travel at night and do not walk out at night - the chances are good that you will be mugged ! Other than that have a great time !
