“just okay”

JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort, Spa & Golf

3 of 5 stars
Los Angeles, CA
Oct 20, 2008

I stayed here for one night and found the experience to be just okay. The hotel was horribly understaffed; it took forever to get the front desk to answer the phone, 10 minutes for the valet to retrieve the car , and there was absolutely no one to be found by the pool for help with towels.

The hotel has good bones that speak to the resort it was before it became part of Marriott. My room was very large and comfortable, but the juxtaposition between the original details (crown moulding and the ceiling fan) and the new details (hideous beige vinyl wallpaper) tells me that despite the lovely surroundings, it is still a Marriott.

Also, the casino is quite tired.

“Our new Las Vegas Destination”

JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort, Spa & Golf

Oct 15, 2008

My wife and I stayed at the Marriott for two nights in late September. Whoever designed the rooms at this hotel knew what travelers today want most – plenty of space. As other reviewers have noted, the bedrooms and bathrooms here are extremely spacious and we loved it. We didn’t want the hustle and bustle of the Strip and enjoyed the solitude afforded by the Marriott. Our one visit to the Strip was only a 15-20 minute drive however. We didn’t have time to take advantage of the many facilities here but perhaps will do so on our next visit because we promised ourselves we would be back. In fact, I believe we have found our permanent Las Vegas retreat !

“Amazing Room, Gross Casino”

Hubby & I just got back from a night at the JW Marriott. We booked it through Expedia for a decent rate. The hotel itself is large, and is connected to a casino. We LOVED the room, especially the bathroom; both were suprisingly large, and the bathroom was fabulous - giant jacuzzi tub (big enough for two!) and shower. (The room and bathroom could've both benefited by flat screen TVs, though.) The hotel's grounds were nice, but not spectacular. The casino connected to the hotel was an obvious favorite of the "retired" crowd, and completely reeked of cigarette smoke (worse than any casino we visited during the weekend). The drive back and forth to the Strip got old after the third time, so if you're wanting to be a part of the action on the Strip, this might not be the place for you. Nonetheless, a nice hotel.

“A superb stay - treat”

JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort, Spa & Golf

I was staying here as a Marriott platinum member on points for a 2 night stay in the middle of a trip around CA/Utah.

Arrival was easy, self parking was simple, hotel looked lovely. Check-in went great, as a platinum member I was given a welcome that was very pleasant, with loads of freebies in my keypad (breakfast & spa pass). I was also given a room with a view of the strip (as requested prior to check-in). The room was superb, French windows, huge wide screen TV (It wasn't a flat screen note, but, it was big and in a TV cabinet. Lovely king sized bed (as with all Marriotts very comfy) and sizable room. But - the best was the bathroom.... we had a walk-in shower, toilet with a separate door and... a Jacuzzi bath! Won us over instantly and we definitely enjoyed our time there.

First night we didn't feel like going to Vegas and ate at the Irish bar on site and had a small play in the connected Casino. The bar was very nice - we had good food (great steak!), good service and even a Guinness. Also had a small play in the Casino which was fun, but, nothing like in the centre of Vegas - mainly filled with older travellers.

For breakfast both days we ate at the 'Ceres' restaurant - breakfast was very tasty with an omelette chef and good service. A good selection and nice views of the grounds outside. Speaking of the grounds - again very pleasant, we probably only saw a small portion of them, sitting by the pool drinking and swimming in it - all very enjoyable. Only minor quibble here was that the service there wasn't so great - we had to get our own drinks most of the time (and removed the tip from the server who didn't come to collect the bill or ask us if we wanted more drinks for over 1.5 hours!). But, we enjoyed sunbathing - then it was time for 'Vegas baby'

Got the free shuttle to the strip (runs about every 2 hours), though we did tip the driver (seemed to be a standard to tip around $5/person each way, so not entirely free - though it is optional!), saw Vegas and returned to the hotel.

Overall had a superb time, when we come back to Vegas we'll stay here again - it’s great to be off strip, but, still be able to get into the centre easily. The hotel was lovely, staff really great (ignoring the pool!) and our room was great.

To say about what other reviewers mentioned... our air conditioner was silent (though we did have to shut the French windows to run it which was mentioned in our welcome notes).

“Heaven at the JW Marriott”

This is a top-notch hotel off the Strip, yet within easy reach of the Strip and surrounding businesses.

Although I rated this an "excellent" stay, I do have some quibbles. Pulling up to the hotel, we learned from a bellman that we had to backtrack to another building for check-in. No big deal, but maybe this could have been handled by the concierge on her phone. Kudos to the bellhop team - those folks were great.

Our room was really beautiful, with a lovely view of the eastern horizon. I had no problem with the lack of a flat-screen TV (perhaps there was one?) as these are hugely "anti-green" devices and still only show you the same shows you'd get on any other TV.

Housekeeping was outstanding, making no fuss about our bikes being in room. The bathroom was beautiful and beautifully kept. The beds were dressed with soft linens and a plush mattress top. We slept very well!

One problem was the noise of the air conditioner. We called for help with this, but the handyman who arrived was only able to tell us how to use it, not how to fix it (it was quite loud). We solved the problem by just leaving it off, which is probably not an option for guests during the summer months.

We ate at Shizen - wow! So yummy! We also ate at an in-hotel cafe, which was good food-wise, but bad cigarette-smoke-from-the-casino-wise. We ate at Ceres, and the food was excellent both times, and at brunch, creative while still offering the old standbys. Service was quite good.

I agree with another reviewer who found the lack of Wi-Fi annoying. With this quality of hotel and the availability of this service at other accommodations, JW should just make it happen. A boon to all and a plus for visitors - and for the hotel.

One caveat: you are about a half hour from the Strip. But that's the beauty of this place.
