“Hotel in need of refurbishing on the inside”

Super 8 New Ulm

From the outside, the hotel looks well cared for, but upon entry the place just feels filthy. A deep down filth. The pillows! The thinnest I've encountered. I could've folded over one of the blankets and achieved greater thickness. I asked if there was anything they could do about them, and the nice lady at the front desk provided me with two pillows that were a bit better except for the long hairs on the pillow cases. If there is such thing as a Super 8 Motel Chain inspector, I doubt he or she would allow this property to keep the name. It tarnishes the image that I've experienced by staying at Super 8 Motels in other cities.

The staff is friendly and chatty, but it's as if they realize the situation with the decaying property and thrown up their hands.

This is the kind of place that makes you wonder if they really did in fact wash the sheets or simply just remade the bed (when we arrived, I noticed there was a large wrinkle at the foot of the bed where the sheets were bunched up.)

I showered as soon as I got to my next hotel in Mankato (a Fairfield Inn).

You'd be better off sleeping in your car. I stayed at an EXCELLENT Super 8 Hotel in Cherokee, Iowa in 6/2007, and figured I would find the same level of quality here. Not even close.

The bathroom door in the room was hollow and had about a 2.5" hole smashed into one side of it. There was NO HOT WATER on the morning of checkout between 6-9AM (credited $10), and I talked to numerous guests who confirmed that. There were also cigarette ashes on the carpet by the nightstand, cigarette burns on one of the worn bedspreads, and numerous pock marks in 1 wall that looked like someone had shot BB's at it. The beds slept well, however.

The hotel was completely full due to a festival in town. The morning of checkout, there was ONE person who appeared to be trying to cover both the Front Desk and Continental Breakfast duties. She was doing an EXCELLENT JOB (no criticism there), but she was obviously overwhelmed by most of the hotel guests checking out and due to that, the breakfast offerings suffered. There were 2 types of donuts offered, both of them still in the bag from the grocery store next door and the pastries were all individually wrapped, revealing that they weren't fresh There was little coffee available as there was no one making it (to do the front desk debacle), and the eating area was very small and connected to the front desk area so between diners and guests checking out, it was very crowded.

(The young woman at the front desk told us she had alerted the manager the night before of the massive checkouts that would be happening but the Manager said that SHE WAS NOT GOING TO COME IN AND HELP REGARDLESS and she didn't, either).

The main landing between the breakfast area and the stairs to the second floor was filthy and stained, and they had been there for awhile. The front parking area (very small, larger lot on side) was very sandy, not good for the 8-10 motorcycles parked there.

I will not be staying here again.

“Not so Super”

This hotel was the only one available due to a softball tournament in town. When entering the lobby you can already tell the property is not well cared for. We waited for over 5 minutes and looked around for someone to check us in. I finally called the hotel and the front desk clerk answered. She was in the back doing laundry. She promptly checked us in. Upon entering our room there were 2 small double beds with outdated furnishings. My 3 year old sat on the bed and made a comment that it smelled like dog. The airconditioner was extremely loud and we were on the 1st floor which was actually the basement.. To top it off they do not provide shampoo. I had to walk to the grocery store and buy shampoo to take a shower. Since the shower didn't drain, I stood in knee deep water. My husband had to wait 20 minutes for my shower to drain so he could take his. Breakfast was a joke. Some day old bread to toast and a cereal choice. We went to the Holiday Inn which has 6 different breakfasts to choose from for under 3.00. I would definitely never stay here again.

I'm not a picky person but there was nothing super about this Super 8! We stayed on the third floor and nothing was remodeled that I could tell! Walked in the lobby door and it reaked of smoke, stains all over the carpet in front of the check in. If there had been space available anywhere else, I would have changed hotels. Loud crazy softball teams all over our floor, hard as a rock beds, frozen doughnuts for breakfast, carpet had never been vacuumed in our room when we checked in, loud fan in the air conditioner that kept us up all night, stains under the toilet seat - yeck!!! Obviously the cleaning staff didn't care about anything. This was a dump and the only place I've stayed that was worse was a youth hostel in Paris 20 years ago - but hey, it was Paris at least!

You'd think in a city full of Germans they could find some staff who know how to clean! My Oma would be horrified!

My husband and I stayed at the Super 8 after we were married in New Ulm. We stayed in their suite that has a two person jacuzzi. I believe it was around 100$/night, which, I felt was reason for the service that was provided.

Sure the Holiday Inn might be ritzier, but they don't offer jacuzzi suites. The suites at the Holiday Inn are more suited to a bachelorette party because they have a bar set up in their rooms.
