“How is it possible this is #1?”

As others have noted, this is a diner-like, chain-food type of dining experience. Like the Lobster Pot, it's a place for tourists, but the Pot has outstanding food. My niece failed to call me before eating here. She ordered lobster bisque soup then lobster ravioli. She said it was the same sauce for the soup as on the pasta. If you like Friendly's, you'll like the Mayflower.

“Vegetarians: go somewhere else.”

Vegetarian visitor that ended up hungry at the end of the girls night in P-town. This place is cheap. So cheap they served me mixed frozen vegetables as side dish and the rice pilaf was nothing more than oil-laden white rice. The waitstaff doesn't even say pardon me as they reach over your food to pour beverages. Maybe I expect alot...but I thought P-town would have more to offer than this. Next time I'll try the international menu when visiting. It is the 21 century...right? vegetarians are not taboo as being gay isn't taboo in P-town. Mayflower, you are indesperate need of a menu overhaul.

Great restaurant on the main street in Provincetown - in the mould of a traditional British fish and chip shop. Great prices, great service and decent no frills food. Not one for a romantic special night but if you're after a good quick meal would definitely recommend it. Despite looking like a cafe has a full bar and mixes a mean margarita !

“Great place for locals and visitors alike”

The Mayflower is one of my favorite stops when I visit P-town. The food is always top-notch in a casual eatery kind of way. I'd say their staff is several stars above average for a tourist town and are a pleasant change from the aloof staff you find in most other seasonal restaurants.

I like the ambiance of the historical downtown that is part of the experience there too. Nothing fancy or fake just a trip back in time to smpler times. Not just another franchised clone.

My faves - fish sandwich, Portuguese scrod, spicy pork chop, stuffed clam, and the best of the best - baked local sea scallops.

About the only downside is they are pretty popular so in peak times there may be a wait, but it's worth it.

“A P'Town Tradition”

The Mayflower Cafe is a historical treasure set smack dab in the middle of all the 'action' P'Town has to offer. It is a welcome oasis from all the chi-chi, pretentious and overpriced joints that line Commercial Street. It is not snobby, elitist or precious. It is welcoming to all, serves great food and at very reasonable prices. Presentation is basic (fine by me). I prefer this simple approach. It is a welcome alternative to the popular trend of being served a miniscule portion, stacked vertically and manhandled by all the kitchen staff for the sake of a ostentatious presentation.
I have been visiting Cape Cod and P'town since the early 1970's. Much has changed over the years, but I can count on the Mayflower. The fact that a restaurant has been in existance since 1929 is a miracle in itself but even more so in Provincetown.
Over the years I have sampled the dinners, sandwiches, soup etc. (all good) but lately my favorite is a meal I made up myself off their menu: the stuffed clam appetizer (huge and great) and a side of their wonderful spaghetti (great sauce). This is plenty for me. My husband usually adds a bowl of Portugese Kale soup to the above.
Anyway, if you are in Provincetown and want good food in a friendly atmosphere, in a historical setting, that won't break the bank , I highly recommend the Mayflower Cafe.
