We went to Salt Island based on its online menu, which I've learned is never a good thing. What sounds good doesn't always translate onto the plate. Service was poor from the start. The Hostess towered above us on a pedestal at the front entrance like some guardian. Behind her, a fishy smell was noticeable. We said we were waiting for two others, but they were already there. She never connected the two and we only found the rest of our party when we decided to get a table and wait ourselves.
At the table a $100 bottle of wine was plopped down unasked for and our waiter went to get drinks. He brought the first round and disappeared, never to explain the menu, the specials, etc. We saw others getting the rolling tray of meat, but it never appeared by our table. Another waiter appeared eventually to take our order. What happened to the first? We could still see him waiting on other tables and he even came over again to ask if we wanted another round of drinks. This weird trade off occurred all night long with little explanation.
Even poor service can be excused if the food is good, but it wasn't. Items didn't match the menu descriptions very closely. My spinach salad arrived with a green-gray rosette blob of something on the side that I still can't place - egg maybe? I ordered a 'prime' steak that clearly was a lower grade. It had lots of gristle and had been soaked in some salty/smoky tenderizer that gave it a chemical taste. At this price point, it was unacceptable. Coworkers ordered fish that was mediocre at best. We never could figure out exactly what was 'tropical' about the tropical rice.
At the end we shared one of those giant desserts that seem obscene after a large meal and left pretty disappointed in the whole fairly expensive experience.
