“Not Terrible”

Cavalier Hotel

3 of 5 stars
New York, NY
Jul 8, 2008

It should be noted that myself and four friends went down to South Beach for a Bachelor Party, we are all 30 years old, and not high maintenance. We arrived late to the Hotel, and only after driving past it twice did we start looking for the address. I was not a part of the check in process, but it seemed lengthy. Although we requested two rooms adjoining or at least near each other, the rooms we got were no where near each other on the first floor. The room I was handed was the first room off the lobby/bar, and the on top of being very loud, there was a large stain on the comforter that looked… biological. I spun right around and requested another room, after some run around and a lot of waiting, I received another room across the hall from the other room we had received, despite being told five minutes earlier that they were sold out and there were no rooms anywhere near each other. The second room was better, but went right along with the rest of the reviews of this hotel, dinghy, small unclean bathroom, non working TV, etc. Seeing as how we weren't planning on spending much time there the hotel was acceptable. What further annoyed me however was later that night three young ladies checked into the adjoining room from us. Proving once and for all that not only did they have rooms near each other, but there were adjoining rooms available when we checked in, but they wanted to get rid of the room right off the lobby, and we looked like the kind of people who weren't going to complain about it.

The "Continental Breakfast" was laughable, but again I didn't choose this hotel for luxury. The drinks at the bar were great, but I was charged varying prices depending on who was bartending, and by varying prices I mean $7 for a drink from one guy, and $13 a drink from the next, and I'm not talking about Happy Hour/Regular prices, I purchased the drinks at the same time of day on consecutive weekdays. We never tried the food there, but the restaurant was usually busy, so I'm assuming it was good. They do provide "Beach Towels" but they are normal bath towels, so I recommend bringing your own to lay out on. Our room was cleaned daily, the beds were made, but the linens were not changed over the course of the 5 days I was there. We were never sure if they were changing the towels or just folding and hanging the same ones because they were always dry after the room was cleaned. Overall I would stay here again because of the location, but this is not somewhere I would bring a girlfriend.

    • Liked — The location was great, the Rum Punch was great, and it's stumbling distance to the bars and clubs of South Beach
    • Disliked — The rooms are dingy and small, the view was terrible, and we were awoken by migrant workers next door every morning.

Cavalier Hotel

Staying in this hotel was definitely an experience. It was an okay place to stay, however the pictures on the website are very misleading. I have stayed at Motel 6's that were cleaner and nicer than this hotel. Yes, it is located on South Beach and it was the cheapest rate ($99/night) we could find, but it was not at all what we expected. In our room, there was an undershirt (also known as a wife beater) hanging from the A.C. vent that has been there for who knows how long. In our friends room, the bathrooms were so small that your knees would hit the door if you sat on the toilet. Our remote control didn't work. Our friends had a big TV and we had about a 10in TV. The pictures on the hotel website makes it seem as though it had a nice contemporary style, when really it was nothing like that. If anyone decides to stay there, I would advise that you not expect what is on the pictures. Have an open mind and a can of Lysol :)

“Never Again”

Booked hotel with Expedia. Stayed here previously two years ago. DIRTY! DIRTY! DIRTY! There is no lobby so to speak, basically a bar with a check in counter. The lobby has a stinch from the previous nights clubbing. Hotel is a bar at night with patrons coming in going throughout the night. The carpet couldn't possibly be any dirtier. NO MAID SERVICE. We could only get fresh towels, if we returned our old towels. Would only reccomend for college students looking for a inexpensive place to shower and party.

“a fun throwback”

Cavalier Hotel

May 7, 2008

The Cavalier is a funky decco hotel perfectly located on a lively but not mental strip of Ocean Drive, right on the best part of the beach and next door to Gloria Estevan's hotel The Cardoza. My wife and I, both in our forties, thought the hotel had a hip, hole in the wall quality we found very romantic. There is no actual lobby. Guests enter through a restaurant / bar called CJ's Crab Shack. The food is pretty good, and the place is full of hipsters all night long. The front desk is tucked in a corner by the bar. Next to the desk is a vintage 3 passenger elevator, complete with a hinged door and one of those scissor cages. Every time I took the elevator I felt like I was in a Cagney movie. We had a room on the third at the very back of the hotel so it was pretty quiet, although like all decco hotels the walls are thin. The bedding was decent, the bed was good, and the tile floor looked new. There was a walk in closet with open shelves, but no storage otherwise. The bathroom was small and a little run down looking, but everything worked and there was lots of hot water. Central ac worked well, and the temp was in the mid 80's while we were there. I found the hotel staff excellent. The front desk crew were polite and helpful on the phone, and absolutely charming in person. The maid was also first rate. We tracked sand all over every day, and every afternoon the room was made spotless again. If you are expecting Holiday Inn, you'll probably hate the Cavalier, and South Beach for that matter. But anyone looking for a cool place to crash after a day in the surf and a night in the lounge will love it. And the price can't be beat.

And a word to the wise....leave grampy home when you go to Miami.

“Good value (The delano it aint)”

Cavalier Hotel

Apr 2, 2008

WMC 2008. The best budget hotel in south beach I've found yet.
Yes it smells damp when you first arrive as do most Hotels in sobe. I would describe the lobby/bar as quirky it doesnt resemble any of the pictures. Its more of a beach bar effect with a large bar plasma screens and bar stools. Drinks are reasonable (for sobe) and the food was above average. The crabs and sea food were first class.

My room was plenty big enough and the efficiant cleaning lady earned herself a decent tip. Fair sized with primitive air con. We didnt have any of the plush linen in the photos but was clean and comfortable. The deco was the usual sobe poor effort. I'm convinced that Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles work as painters and decorators in sobe during the winter.

The beach is literally just accross the street and the location was superb for WMC. Everything was in walking distance.

My only real moan is the showers. Plenty water pressure but no thermostatic tempreture control. You know... youre taking a shower and the room next door turns on a tap; Viola instant scalding water on your back!! I broke the shower rail getting out so quick and one of the girls in our group slipped trying to avoid the sudden change in tempreture. Dangerous !!!

I rate this hotel for its cleanliness, location, good bar and restaraunt. Oh it was cheap too. I'll probably use the Cavalier again next year.
