“"Miami Condo Oasis" -- pro's and con's of private condos”

Mutiny Hotel

The Mutiny Hotel contains a number of private condos, some of which are rented by the owners. Some owners go through the Hotel's rental program, while others advertise on the Internet and rent directly. We made a reservation for a 2 bedroom condo at the Mutiny advertised as "Miami Condo Oasis" at FloridaVactions(--)

As a family of 4 we prefer the space in a 2 bedroom condo which has a separate living room/dining area, as well as 2 bathrooms. This condo is quite lovely, on the 7th floor overlooking the pool and the bay. The living room has a nice flat screen TV on the wall and good cable selections. The master bedroom is large and comfortable with its own attached bathroom, including bidet. There is no maid service, but there are plenty of linens and towels, and there is a washer/dryer in the unit.

The second bedroom is a bit of a disappointment. It is quite small and has bunk beds which fill up most of the space in the room. Small kids might find it fun, but our teenager preferred to sleep on the living room sofa.

Pro's: Lovely condo at a price which is about a third less than renting directly from the hotel; free parking

Con's:
1. No maid service

2. the A/C has a lock on it so you cannot adjust it yourself. While we were there it was set at 74, which was warmer than we like. Make sure the owner sets the temperature where you like it.

3. Although owner's units are entitled to free parking, there was a lot of confusion with security about using it.

4.Finally, the owner requires a $500 security deposit which is supposed to be returned after 2 weeks. It look me a month to get our security deposit back, and only after the owner lied to me twice about having put it in the mail. Only when I was about to start making complaints to the hotel, to Pay-Pal (which he uses to receive payments), and to the sites he advertises at did he return my money via pay-pal. This was an unnecessary annoyance.

It's a very local area and soo much to do at night. If you're a young college student and you're looking for a cheaper place than South Beach that's nicer, defintely stay here! I had a great time and the hotel was beautiful with a great/friendly staff!

The only good thing about this hotel are the washer and dryer in the room.

I just finished a 4-night stay at the Mutiny with my wife, and we really enjoyed it. Just to be clear, this is NOT the place for you if you're looking for super-luxury, or pampering. But if you're looking for a very comfortable place, well-run, quiet, then the Mutiny is worth considering.

We were in a 1BR suite; the bedroom was small, but the bed itself was comfortable. The living room was more spacious, and the small kitchen was well-equipped. Modern bathroom, very clean throughout the place. The couch was a little cheapo.

The pool was excellent - comfortable deck chairs, nice jacuzzi, plenty of sun (don't blieve the other poster who said there was none).

This place felt like a 3-star to me.

“Oh Dear”

The Mutiny is meant to be a four star hotel. The location is the only thing about it that might possibly justify this rating. It is five minute walk from Coconut Grove, in the evenings a lively restaurant and club area. And the front of the hotel has great views over Biscayne Bay.But the back, where our room was, has views of a busy large multi story car park which, if you stand on the balcony, is almost within touching distance.

The public areas of the hotel that we saw were cramped shabby and out of date. The lift was dusty and dirty .Our apartment , which was a one bedded suite, had three rooms. The bathroom lived up to the four star rating ; it had recently been re decorated and looked fresh and clean. In contrast the bedroom was small and dark . The queen sized bed and television stand practically filled all the available space. The bedspread looked shabby and not very clean. The living room had a cooker, microwave, fridge, small eating table with two chairs and a sofa bed. The furniture was scratched chipped and of poor quality. The sofa bed looked old and worn .It sagged in the middle and must have given anyone who slept on it bad back ache. The balcony had not been cleaned for a long time.It was filthy. All the windows to the balcony, living room and bedroom were dirty with bits of mud etc splattered across them restricting the light and making it quite difficult to see out clearly.. This was 6 weeks after Wilma. And all it needed to clean the balcony windows was to open the door, walk outside onto the balcony, and clean them.

The whole accommodation w as clearly unacceptable in a four star hotel. I went down to reception and complained. I offered to pay more for a better room .I was told they were full and nothing w as available. Our stay at the Mutiny was to be the grand finale of our trip. A little luxury in the big city before we flew home, after two weeks spent travelling through the country towns of Florida. There was no alternative but to search for other accommodation. It was the week of Thanksgiving. Everything w as likely to be booked up. So we had to try several hotels before we could eventually find one which could take us for the four days required.

I then returned to the Mutiny front desk and checked out; an hour or so after checking in. This time the front desk manager was present. He asked what my complaints were. I told him., he apologised, and said he used to work for what he described as “ a proper hotel” before he came to the Mutiny. The problem apparently is that all the suites in the Mutiny are owned by individuals and the hotel management company just acts as their agent in letting them out when the owner does not wish to use them. So their ability to control the quality of the accommodation etc is clearly not optimum.

We paid $130 through Hotwire. Maybe . because we were Hotwire customers, we were given the worst room in the hotel. I do not know. All I do know is that given the accommodation we were allocated and the public areas we saw, this hotel should not be regarded as a four star ;at the most two.
