The Hotel Azul in Key West is an interesting hybrid combining the privacy of a standard hotel with the intimacy and personal service of a bed and breakfast. Morning starts with a generous buffet breakfast, including an assortment of fruits, cereals, and yogurts plus soft boiled eggs and especially delicious bread. Eat under the umbrellas at one of the nine poolside tables or at the table located outside your room. Then hit Duval Street a short three and half block walk. Located in the heart of Old Key West, the Azul is a converted Queen Anne mansion. Ground level guest rooms open onto the pool deck. Second floor rooms onto a wide balcony that overlooks the pool or onto the street side verandah. A third floor suite with private balcony is accessible by a winding stair case. The front yard of the Azul is paved to provide guest parking which makes it somewhat less inviting than neighboring guesthouses with landscaped front gardens, but once you enter the front door or side gate the furnishings and landscaping are first rate. The management and staff make you feel at home and provide excellent recommendations on dining and recreational activities. A late afternoon float in the hotel pool after a full day of sightseeing was one of the highlights of our trip.

Great location, clean and friendly. But rates at 120 dollars? The best price we could get was 160 plus tax, and that was in the low season.

The four of us came to Key West late one night a few weeks ago. We stumbled upon Azul, met Dominic who was more than helpful, and decided to stay after taking a look at the rooms.

Me and my boyfriend stayed on the top floor in the gorgeous suite. Everything was neat and fresh and felt (and was!) luxurious. The minor thing we felt a bit uncomfortable with was that the door to the room was a glass door - ie. see-through. Since the room is on the top floor and no one else walks by it's really not much of a problem. I'm a bit scared of the dark though, but I got used to it pretty quickly.

The breakfast was great, the staff friendly, serviceminded and helpful. While checking in Dominic gave us a thorough guide to great places to eat and fun things to do while staying and we ended up doing a lot of it and had a blast!

Overall we were more than happy with our stay at Azul - our 3 night stop in Key West turned out to be the best part of the entire vacation!

“Fabulous experience at the Azul!”

My boyfriend and I are just back from a trip around southern Florida which included a 3 night stay at the Azul in Key West.

My good experiences started before we had even arrived when I had emailed the hotel about availability. Dominic responded to my emails very quickly and was very helpful.

Dominic greeted us on arrival and gave us a map which he marked with restaurant recommendations, places of interest, etc. This map was well used throughout the stay.

We stayed in the poolside Fontana room, which was lovely. It was so nice to come back at the end of the day and just jump in the pool. Yes, the rooms are small but this isn't the Hilton! The charm and character of the building more than make up for the size of the rooms.

The breakfast was wonderful, a great selection of fresh fruit, fresh bread, cereals, bolied eggs, fruit juice and teas and coffee. It set you up nicely for the day.

The Azul is about a 15-20 minute walk to the heart of Duval Street. Although the walk can be come quite cumbersome we were glad that we stayed in the quieter part of town.

I would not recommend driving around Key West - the streets are quite small and there are not many places to park. Most of the sights can be seen on foot but we would also recommend hiring bikes for the day and also going on the train tour which enables you to see much more of the island.

If I had to say anything negative, it would be the loud noise of the air conditioning in the room. I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Azul in the future or recommend it to my family and friends.

Just back from four nights stay at the Azul Key West. I chose the hotel based on research from TripAdvisor.com. My wife and I were celebrating our first anniversary and our first visit to Key West.

I contacted Tracy two days before we arrived to arrange our dinner our first night. I gave her simple instructions: outdoor seafood in clear view of the fireworks (it was July 4). We arrived in time to get a shower and dressed for our dinner. The night was magical! She had booked a table at the Strip House at the Reach Resort, sister property to the Casa Marina Resort. We had a bottle of wine and a huge fresh seafood "plateau" as an appetizer. Even though we ordered entrees, we started eating our appetizer, left our table to get a better view of the fireworks, and came back, we discovered we were full. The waiter canceled our entrees without a blink. Excellent evening!

A few things about the property, because it definitely is not for everyone: do not book the Aria suite if you are not spry! It is up two narrow spiral staircases! It was not a problem for my wife and I, but could be a huge issue for people who are not physically fit. (there are other rooms that would suffice nicely). I had read one review that complained about the bathroom and I can see if that you are a large or even tall person you might feel cramped. My wife and I saw it as quaint. We blew a fuse with our hairdryer (the house is old!) but Dominic told me by phone where to find the fuse box and all was well again.

So, if you realize you are not going to the Westin resort with a huge marble bathroom and lots of noisy neighbors, keeping in mind the personal touches that abound (linens, pool towels, aveda products), this Hotel is as fabulous as everyone else here has said.

Highlights: the breakfast is a work of art and delicious, location is close enough to walk but far enough for peace and quiet, pool is nice and refreshing, this place is a wonderful way to visit Key West!
Thanks Dominic!
