The Hotel Azul in Key West is an interesting hybrid combining the privacy of a standard hotel with the intimacy and personal service of a bed and breakfast. Morning starts with a generous buffet breakfast, including an assortment of fruits, cereals, and yogurts plus soft boiled eggs and especially delicious bread. Eat under the umbrellas at one of the nine poolside tables or at the table located outside your room. Then hit Duval Street a short three and half block walk. Located in the heart of Old Key West, the Azul is a converted Queen Anne mansion. Ground level guest rooms open onto the pool deck. Second floor rooms onto a wide balcony that overlooks the pool or onto the street side verandah. A third floor suite with private balcony is accessible by a winding stair case. The front yard of the Azul is paved to provide guest parking which makes it somewhat less inviting than neighboring guesthouses with landscaped front gardens, but once you enter the front door or side gate the furnishings and landscaping are first rate. The management and staff make you feel at home and provide excellent recommendations on dining and recreational activities. A late afternoon float in the hotel pool after a full day of sightseeing was one of the highlights of our trip.
