Property is at the quiet end of Duval. Get ready to walk at least a mile each way if you want to go to the other end of Duval where most of the bustle and sunsets are....we drove but parking is very hard to find. we walked everywhere. there are people taxis but they charge too much. The property was clean, room was nice and clean. Bathroom was nicely rennovated. But its just a room. Bed, TV, bathroom...and the photos misled me because i thought we had a true balcony, but really each room just has a walk out to the walkway/balcony that is all connected. and its outside your entry door. so there is no balcony off the back of the room. the photos on the web site are totally misleading there. The beach is small and cute, but the water is totally unswimmable and even too brown/murky/seaweedy for wading to cool off. we didnt even use the beach here because it was too hot to not have somewhere to cool off. this is not a true beach, just a sandy spot. So overall, the hotel was so-so. The pool was out of order which we did not really care about anyway because it was small and unattractive. Go to the Southernmost hotel pool with the tiki bar. MUCH nicer!
We were lucky to meet a honeymooming couple and stay at their 2-bedroom luxury suite for our last night, at no cost. These are 1.5 million$ suites that they rent out for less than $250 a night and are 2 bedroom, so VERY affordable if you have 4 people. They were AWESOME, subzero appliances in the kitchen, 3 bathrooms, granite counters, kohler applicances, glass walls, an tropical poool set up. So this blew the Southernmost out of the water. It was called Santa Maria suites and ill write a review there too.
Anyway, the Southernmost is at the quiet end. If we go back, I will stay at the Santa Maria suites or at one of the many cute questhouses/b&bs...they are more centrally located.
The 2 beaches in Key West, Smather's beach and Fort Zachary st park are good. We had a car so we drove. Dont try to walk to Ft. Zachary Taylor beach, about a 30 min. walk each way in the HEAT....drive there. Nice beach, decent water but not totally clear and rocky bottom. Smathers is much longer and has many food vendors. There is a lot of sea grass but if you walk over it, you get to a clear portion of the ocean which is great.
We did a Fury all day boat tour which had snorkel, parasailing, jet skiing, kayak, breakfast, lunch, drinks and other water games. $139 pp, includes a sunset cruise which is pretty boring but has free alcohol ( for another day).....have done many many tours and this one ranks up there as the most worth is one. That is a lot of activity for $139 pp...very good price.
did a lot of research on food beforehand and it paid off. You MUST go to:
Blue Heaven - breakfast
Santiago's Bodega - dinner (tapas)
ilTrattoria - Italian dinner and there is a salsa bar in the back, separated
Ambrosia - Japanese
5 brothers for empanadas and cuban lunches
Rooftop Cafe for dinner
Hog's Breath bar for $10 oysters
overall, loved Key West, loved the food especially, the bars, Duval street, the beaches, even though there are few, the people, everything, it was great!
