My husband and I traveled to Key West with 2 other couples and stayed at the Heron House on Simonton Street May 29-June 2. One of the couples shopped for hotels via the internet and let me tell you, Heron House is truly as beautiful as the pictures on their website! Everything was just as we had seen on the website. None of us had ever stayed at a bed & breakfast before and weren't too sure what to expect, but after experiencing the peacefulness and tranquility at the Heron House we have all decided to come back again in a few years.
All 3 of our rooms were grouped together in a shaded porch area off of the pool (poolside room). Even though we were all literally next door to each other, we never heard voices or TV sounds through the walls. The staff at Heron House was exceptional! They were "there" but barely visible, always helpful and very informative. Our room and that of one other couple was rather small with one double bed, a mini refrigerator and a stand-up shower in the bathroom, but still perfectly sized for 2 people. The third couple had a slightly larger room with a whirlpool tub/shower and a mini bar. None of us had any complaints at all. We all spent each afternoon and early evening sitting on "our" porch outside of our rooms enjoying snacks and drinks.
The breakfast served varied each day. The staples were coffee, teas, orange juice, cereal, fruit salad, hard boiled eggs, breads (+ english mufflins and croissants with a toaster near by), and the staff served french toast one day and cheese omelets the next. Each day breakfast was delicious and filling!
One of the best things about the Heron House is the location. You are 2 blocks from Duval Street where all the action takes place...bars, restaurants, shops, but at night it is so peaceful and quiet that you don't realize just how close to the nightlife you are.
My best story...after we had returned home and I began to sort laundry, I realized that when my husband was re-packing our suitcase, he left a pair of my capris at the hotel. One quick phone call later and Rebecca at the front desk had already checked the lost and found (with no results) and promised to check our room for my capris when it wasn't occupied. I received a phone call from her a few hours later letting me know that she found them behind the wooden luggage rack. Rebecca is shipping them back to me and has totally reinforced my pleasure with Heron House. Not many hotels would go out of the way as she did to check the room again for a missing item of clothing. Thank you, Rebecca! And thank you, Heron House. We are all planning another trip to Key West and will be staying at Heron House again!
