“My Favorite Place to Eat in Fernandina Beach”

Happy Tomato Cafe

5 of 5 stars
South East Georgia
Aug 17, 2008

On 16 August 2008 I had the oppurtunity to eat at The Happy Tomato Cafe in Fernandina Beach Florida. The was a real nice place. Richard and Bernard were excellent hosts.
Our motorcycle riding club the Southern Cruisers (Hinesville, Claxton and Savannah Chapters) did a ride to Fernandina with plans to eat at the Happy Tomato. None of us had ever eaten at this cafe. I have to say - it was fantastic. The food, courtyard and emplyees could not have been better. I had the smoked turkey sandwich and it was delicious. Almost more than I could eat, almost. Their menu has something for everyone. There is an ad I saw somewhere that says "Indoor/Outdoor relaxed atmosphere featuring fresh salads, deli sandwiches, and THE BEST BBQ " and this says it all.
After our meal, we decided to walk around and explore the area. The Cafe was close to the wharf and downtown shopping. We made out way back to the cafe and got drinks before heading out.
Anyone looking for good food, great surroundings and friendly folks, this is the place for you. Our group consisted of all age folks - seniors, teen and all ages in between. I hope you enjoy The Happy Tomato Cafe as much as we did.

“Just what we were looking for!”

This place is great for a nice little lunch. The courtyard is a wonder, the palms, ferns and large table umbrellas make it really charming. The light is lovely, and the food is tremendous! My husband, who is Georgia born and bred, said this was the best BBQ sandwich he ever ate. I had chicken salad sandwich with pasta salad and both were delicioust. Even the kids ate well without complaint (which is amazing), and you have never seen more peanut butter on a PB sandwich!! The Happy Tomato is a happy place, with a staff that really cares about your experience and your food. And the prices were reasonable (it doesn't get better than that).

I wish there was somewhere like this near my home. I am sure I would be a regular. It is also nice to find somewhere to eat a "normal meal", because when you are traveling, as we were, it gets tiring eating out sometimes because there aren't a wide variety of "regular" food.

We were thrilled to find the Happy Tomato, only sad that it was on the last day or our vacation.

“Truly outstanding slow-cooked barbeque”

My husband and I arrived in Fernandina Beach mid-afternoon, and we were hungry. Most of the regular restaurants were closed between lunch and dinner, so we wandered the streets looking for someplace that was open. Lucky for us we found this little inauspicious gem, (open from 11:00 am until 5:30 pm), tucked just off the main street in a sort of casual patio courtyard. Most of the seating is outside at picnic style tables, but there are 3 or 4 little metal tables inside. Since it was chilly, we opted to eat inside, where the owner took our order and could not have been more hospitable, nor more enthusiastic--both in general and about his wonderful barbeque. He explained the slow-cooking/smoking process, using oak, which imparts a delectable flavor into the meat. In fact, the ribs were so tender and delicious with just the oak and dry spices that we really did not need the barbeque sauce options (mustard, spicy, and traditional) that were served on the side--although they were good, too.
We got to talking with the owner, whose name is Richard, and found that he had attended culinary school and worked as a chef for several years before opening his own place last September--the name Happy Tomato came from a now defunct cafe which was in a different location. (He's a great conversationalist--he described to me how to make a proper "fond", a French term for what sounded like making a very tasty gravy. Then we talked about football.)
But back to the food: These were the best barbeque ribs we had ever tasted. So good, in fact, that we opted to forego the other restaurants in Fernandina Beach and returned to The Happy Tomato the next afternoon to try the pulled pork and chicken--incredibly wonderful. The chocolate chip cookies, made by Richard's wife, are also yummy and well worth the calories.
