“Beware of the CAVE (studio unit)”

Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort

2 of 5 stars
guilford,CT
Aug 16, 2008

I really wanted to love this place but I would never go back. With all of the beautiful towns and resorts in the world - this isn't someplace I would want to waste a week of vacation on. To start - DO NOT stay in a studio unit. It is a cave! I called every single day to try to upgrade my room but was nicely told that there was no availability. The studio/hotel units are just awful. They are tiny! I have shared a hotel room with my kids before (11 and 8) but this was ridiculous. The only window in the place faced the central hall that everyone on the floor has to walk past so there is no privacy. We had to keep the shades closed most of the time because of this which made it feel like we were living in a dark cave. There is a small kitchenette area where we had hoped to prepare simple breakfasts and lunch but there is no table to sit at! Who wants to sit in a dark closet eating cereal and sandwiches on their bed. The kids slept on a pull -out sofa which was so uncomfortable that even they complained - you could feel every spring! Our mattress wasn't much better and we all had neck and backaches by the last few days. It was clean though and all of the staff was very pleasant.

The rest of the resort was nice enough - the pool was fine and the kids play area, arcade and movie room were nice. The beach is very nice but you have to take a shuttle to get there. Another problem I had was that you had to rent a beach chair and umbrella to sit at the beach! I have been to many beach resorts and I have NEVER had to pay for this. Not to mention that the guy who rents them wasn't even around half of the week to rent if we had wanted to spend 25.00 extra per day. Rip off!

The Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach area is not Florida at its best. It is ugly strip malls and run down beach shops. Besides the beach itself, this area has nothing else going for it except for the Kennedy Space Center which we loved.

Do yourself a favor and find a prettier, part of Florida to stay in where you don't have to pay for beach chairs or sleep in a cave.

“An incredible time! Just what we needed!”

My sister gave us a week here (she owns a timeshare) for our 10th anniversary. I read over the reviews and thought, "Well, at least it's a gift ... it's the thought that counts."

But WOW were we impressed! We had a studio room with a king bed, couch, HDTV, a shower and hot tub. There was a sink, fridge, microwave, and dishes! Good family atmosphere. Enjoyed the pool, the waterslide, the movies, the food. The concierge service and all the workers there were very friendly and helpful.

Some reviewers complained about the tram to the beach. Good grief, the tram took 60 seconds to ride. I live in Kentucky, not a lot of oceanfront property here! So a 60 second tram ride was worth the nice quite beach where my wife and I could sit, relax, read, and have a conversation.

If there was one thing I would change, it would be the thickness of the walls. We stayed next door to folks who had three children. We have four kids ourselves, so we were used to it and didn't mind it (you can't expect kids to act like adults). But if you aren't used to children, it might bug you. But for me, if the atmosphere and set-up were good enough for children, it's good enough for me.

“No Middle Ground”

We were on a time-share tryout. $1500 for a week; we were expecting a lot. Room was mostly clean, has Fiesta Ware dishes, nice tile floors, nice cribs & highchair. Most things seemed sturdy; cooking items were noticeably flimsy. I did find someone's piercing (a hoop with screw ends for who knows what body part!) on the floor, thankfully before my toddler did. The 2nd bedroom nightstand drawer was filled with chocolate crumbs. Dishwasher and laundry exceedingly loud. Oven took literally 20 minutes to heat to 400 degrees.

Beds far from comfortable. Linens bunched up (mattress pads, sheets) constantly. Pillows were adequate. Towels were nice but not soft. Basket of pool towels provided in room.

We were not given an activities schedule. We happened upon one in an elevator while racing to a top floor to watch a cruise ship sail by. We were closed out of the wild animal show (TWICE!) and missed movies, etc. "Waterpark" is minimal; surface surrounding pools gets burning hot in the sun. Beach is quite a trek away, but clean, quiet and serene. Kids' playroom was great fun for my kids, but sometimes dangerous due to older kids running wild (no staff supervision). Movie theatre with cinema seats showing recent movies, but traffic opening & closing door to theatre very annoying (also no staff supervision - at least that we saw).

We stayed on the 1st floor of the oceanfront bldg; could not see ocean. Would have preferred main bldg. Oceanfront parking at a premium - few spots are close to bldg. We had a toddler and an infant, and hauling from outer parking spots was annoying. Our AC quit working and maintenance came lickety-split.

In all, the facility was nice. Management would do better to toot their own horns a little bit and tell customers what services are available. They have a lot to be proud of...and the slide & lazy river aren't the most impressive assets they have. Free 5x7 family photos, movies, air-conditioned playroom, kids' activities all meant more to us than a fancy pool.

We would have purchased a time-share here if price had not prohibited it.

“Beach Wedding -- Perfect!!”

Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort

We spent our second of two weeks in Fla. at RonJon Resort and got married on the beach. Our plans weren't even finalized before we left on the two-week vacation.
We contacted Veronica (guest services rep at RonJon) before we left and she assured us she would take care of everything. Low-and-behold, she came through for us in a big way -- from the flowers, to the woman who performed the ceremony, Veronica planned everything perfectly. And we couldn't have done a better job ourselves. It was as though she knew us personally and was just a warm and caring person who derserves the utmost credit for our spectacular day.
She even got the Resort's professional photographer, Brian, to stay past his day's shift (7:30 p.m. wedding) and do the shoot for us a a very un-wedding-like price. The pictures were of a quality that one would receive at a formal 200-plus attended wedding instead of a few person affair.
The sunet wedding came off without a hitch and was something we will never forget..
Kudos to Veronica and Brian..

Dear BeachgoerfromNJ,

Thank you for your wonderful comments. Our employees have a reputation of performing their responsibilities extremely well. Unfortunately, we have to shut the pool down as required by the health department when issues occur that are out of our control. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Resort on many of your wedding anniversaries!

“Worst EVER!”

Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort

To call this place a "resort" boarders on false advertising, in my opinion.

We should have know as soon as we pulled up there were going to be issues. No bell service...no valet. Again, this place is billed as a "Resort".....

We checked in and are told we must put wrist bands on and keep them on for the for the duration of the stay! I have NEVER heard of such a thing..obsurd! Isn't that what a room key is for...to gain access to facilities, etc.?

No daily room cleaning??? I am not an owner, I am a guest at a beach "resort"...I expect and deserve my suite cleaned every day!

Six towels are provided in the suite for use at the pool for which you must exchange at the towel exchange place to get fresh ones. Just another obsurdity. A true resort would provide towel at the pool to be left at the pool. This place has no clue!

While at the pool facility, we were constantly accosted by the pool Nazi's ( you can tell who they are by the t-shirts that say "Pool Staff" on them) Their job is to make your stay at the pool as unenjoyable as possible, and they do their job well! I want to be able to enjoy my time with my family while on vacation. With the constant badgering from the pool staff about how you can't do this or you can't do that(can't be in the hot tub unless you 12....have to have a tube for the lazy river...can't slide down the water slide with your 2 year old...etc)

Just an aside, we had spent a week at a real resort just up the coast earlier this year and we had no such issues. They wanted their guests to enjoy themselves....I guess.

Only positives were the food at the restaurant and the kids play area.

I will never stay there again and will advise anyone considering it to reconsider. Your money is best spent elsewhere.

I also intend to make my dissatisfaction know to Ron Jon as I don't believe this "resort" does anything positive for their name or reputation.
