Perfect outing for our active family, a mom and two boys (13 & 17). The day begins with a train ride to the site, then soaring through the trees, crossing the Animas River and a little bit of hiking which makes for a full day that all ages can enjoy. It would be a great idea for a corporate outing or family gathering. There were 5-year-olds and 70-year-olds on our trip.
We hopped on the famous narrow gauge train from Durango to Silverton at Rockwood Station(which cuts the train ride in half, about 40-minutes versus over an hour). The train drops you off at the soaring course, a scenic remote valley on the upper Animas River. Paperwork and gearing-up was well managed so we were up in the trees quickly. There is a huge emphasis on safety and the procedures in place which puts everyone at ease. My kids especially enjoyed the brand-new 1/4mile zip line that takes over 40-seconds. It was really fun.
The guides are obviously well-trained to be personable and remember your name. They really made the day enjoyable, so much so my oldest son asked about working there next summer. They were an exceptional group of young people.
Finally, lunch and snacks were OUTSTANDING. No mushy turkey sandwiches, carrot sticks and lukewarm lemonade. A gourmet lunch (like white albacore tuna and pear salad, cold berry soup, pulled bbq pork sandwiches, homemade ice cream sandwiches and a variety of specialty drinks like Fuze, sparkling water, Gatorade) was served on a tree top platform overlooking the river...very nice. To top it off, three chocolate labs wait to fetch for the kids who eat fast and want to play.
It's not a cheap day...but, I wouldn't want to sacrifice the attention to details to save a little money. For more info check out their website, it's very accurate. And yes, your kids will be spinning around upside down through the trees before lunchtime.
