“Great Location”

La Jolla Shores Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Orange City Florida
Oct 9, 2008

Beautiful location right on the Ocean. Pool area is very well maintained with nice landscaping. Front desk was helpful and friendly. Yes, as other reviewers noted, the rooms are a little dated but they are clean and roomy. Bathrooms are separated from sleeping area. Our room was garden view/pool view which was convenient for access to pool and provided a comfortable outside sitting area. Spa was clean and convenient. Starbucks coffee provided gratis. The bar had decent happy hour drink and snack specials, including muscles for $5.00 and it sits right on the ocean for a beautiful view of the sunset. Hotel is located in residential area so it is quiet at night. Parking is in a garage under the hotel and price is reasonable. Stores and restaurants are within easy walking distances from the hotel. Considering that you are staying in one of the single most expensive neighborhoods in the United States you should expect to pay a little more than if you were staying at a Motel 6 next to your average Interstate exit.

“better beds at econolodge”

La Jolla Shores Hotel

1 of 5 stars
los angeles, ca
Sep 19, 2008

We stayed for five days to visit family in the area. The other reviewers are right about the need for updating. I've honestly had a more comfortable bed at an Econolodge! All I ask from a pricey hotel room is a comfortable bed, good linens and a quiet night's sleep. This hotel provided none of these. The bed was hard and bouncy with a wafer thin mattress pad that didn't quite fit the bed. Linens were fairly good quality but not up to a Hilton or Hyatt.
Although we requested a third floor room, the clerk said they didn't have one since they were 100% booked. This was obviously not true. So from our second floor room we could hear everything that went on in the room above us. You'd think that since we were staying five nights at a high rate they might have been more accommodating!
One evening we looked forward to soaking in the outdoor jacuzzi. It was freezing cold. The next evening it was working again.
As others have said, the only good thing about this hotel is the proximity to the ocean. You can walk right out to a beautiful beach. Otherwise, it is a medium level motel in need of updating.

“wonderful beach front hotel”

La Jolla Shores Hotel

5 of 5 stars
seguin, texas
Sep 18, 2008

My sister and i stayed at this hotel for 5 days in September. We were in California for my son's wedding , and the reception was in La Jolla, so we stayed at this hotel since it was walking distance from the reception. We had a wonderful experience-----we were upgraded to an ocean view room without even requesting it----and it was a marvelous room, because not only did we have a beautiful view of the ocean---but also of the park, and there was always some activity in the park. In the mornings i loved watching the dog walkers, and the sunsets were beautiful. Our room was extremely nice---seemed to have been recently painted, and lots of room!!! we really loved the high ceilings--the TV was perfect and i don't understand one reviewer's issue about not being able to see it--------the bath robes were soooo comfortable, and i guess because we were on the 3rd floor, there was no noise whatsoever-----the hot tub looked so inviting, and really wished i had brought a real bathing suit, so i could have soaked----since my body was really sore from a lot of walking. When we checked in our room, our sliding glass balcony door would not open all the way. We told the front desk on our way out, and when we returned a short time later, it was fixed. All of the staff was wonderful. We had breakfast at the Shores restaurant, and it was very good, altho i prefer my crossiants warm. The hotel had a free shuttle that took us to the village, which was really great. We had a wonderful experience at a great hotel, and would love to stay there again!!!

“Sadly in need of a refurb”

La Jolla Shores Hotel

Great location, pleasant rooms, nice amenities but in desperate and dire need of a refurbishment from decoration to new beds to soft furnishings and bathroom fittings. Plumbing awful, frequently blocked lavatory which spewed water over bathroom and bedroom before noticed, so last 2 days of vacation were spent on a soggy bathroom carpet.

“Loved the Ocean, and not much else”

La Jolla Shores Hotel

2 of 5 stars
San Francisco

My wife and I stayed here for 3 days in mid-September as a base for attending my sister's wedding.

Frommer's had it about right - dated and in need of remodel including services and amenities. The only good thing going for this hotel was the proximity of the ocean.

Pluses -

Ocean - We left the sliding glass door open for the evening while we slept - it was great to fall asleep to the sound and smell of the ocean (however, not so great to wake up at the crack of dawn to the sound and smell of the garbage trucks dumping all the trash canisters along the beach).

Staff - very attentive, prompt and courteous.

Minuses -

Rooms - as noted above outdated and need of remodel -they have popcorn ceilings!

Housekeeping - floors needed cleaning - lots of grit on carpet in bedroom and tile in bathroom; pillows smelt like meldew - what is it about oceanfront hotels - wouldn't they realize that mildew is something you have to worry about; undercounter fridge smelled like someone left a fish in there for far too long; crumbs in dresser drawers.

Amenities - no wireless internet (though the hard wire internet does work - however you have to go to the front desk to borrow an ethernet cable); gym is an afterthought - a dark 150 sq ft room off the lobby that housed one treadmill, one elliptical, one upright bike, one universal weight machine and one 27" TV in the upper left corner of the room

Overall, this would get about a 3 star rating from most of the rating agencies and given the price ($299/night) would think you could do better at this price.
