“Hour plus wait to eat”

After all the glowing reviews, here we were disappointed in the Heard. Perhaps we have been spoiled by the Washington DC Smithsonian's Indian museum which handles huge crowds with aplomb in its Native American cuisine cafeteria. The tiny Arcadia Gardens cafe had over an hour wait when we went in February and they were not serving outside. Luckily the museum staff took pity on us and several parties (including some with impatient children who were hungry and did not want to wait an hour _ and yes I identified with them) and sent us all across the street and down a few blocks to a nearby IHOPs where we ate and still got back to see the museum while the waiting line was still waiting.
The boarding school exhibit on the upper floor was a mixed media that was very moving and quite ironic in that it dealt with trying to wipe out Indian culture and replace it with "american" which seems to be what has happened in the culinary aspect of Heard.

“Super place to visit for Indian art and culture”

What a fun and fabulous museum. There's so much to see and do. We spent several hours here the first time (OK, about 5!) and have been back a couple times since for special events and the Indian market. The exhibits change a lot, so there's always something new to see. Plus the shopping is so terrific. There's so much to see with stuff in all price rances. My little one loves this place, the kids galleries are cool with lots of stuff to do. We also love the cafe, in a beautiful courtyard with shade, a fountain and the gorgeous Phoenix weather. Some people worry about parking downtown, but we've never had a problem here. Even the big events are fine bc there's lots on central, you just have to walk a little.

“Outstanding!”

The Heard Museum is housed in a lovely Southwestern style building surrounding an open courtyard. Their main focus is the art and culture of the native people of the area. The collections are beautifully displayed, with very good labeling and accompanyting explanations. There are excellent free public tours throughtout the day. There is an outstanding exhibit of the boarding school experience of many of the Native Americans, enlivened by photos, films, and recordings of many of the former students.

There's so much to see that it's easy to spend almost an entire day at the Heard, and if you do, you'll enjoy lunch in their cafe, with food, presentation, and service of very high quality..

“Not the typical Native American exhibit -- BETTER!”

I have seen a lot of Native American artifacts -- some even in the wild state outdoors. I've seen enough museum exhibits of faded pots that I normally avoid those portion of museums nowadays. However, I read on Travel Advisor that this museum was very good, so I decided to go.

There are many interactive exhibits here -- not just old pottery. The Indian School exhibit is emmotional, as well it should be. You can become educated about the 20+ tribes still living in AZ (who knew there were so many different ones)!

Most importantly for me, however, is the collection of MODERN DAY artistic pieces. There is artwork in numerous formats from modern day Native Americans, inclusing glass work! Some of the pottery will amaze you. There are wonderful shapes and designs. I also recommend attending one of the hourly tours, so you can ask questions of a true Native American.

If you enjoyed the modern day pottery, be prepared for a shock in the gift shop. Even the tiniest piece of pottery was $550 !!

I spent 2 1/2 hours going through the museum including the tour and the gift shop.
