My husband, SIL & BIL spent four nights there last week. After reading about the much lower prices at resorts in AZ in AAA magazine, VIA, we decided to take advantage of that and booked a two bedroom suite for the four of us. We found the whole experience to be wonderful, the staff could not have been better from the moment we drove up. We had wonderful views of Paradise Valley and from our bedroom patio we could also see portions of Camelback Mountain. The rooms were nicely furnished, very comfortable and spacious, we loved some of the design touches, especially in the bathroom. We indulged in a spa day and all of the treatments were fantastic. The only thing that could be improved upon in that area is the salon where we received our manicure /pedicure, it was very small and somewhat outdated. It also shared space with the boutique and you had to go through the boutique to get to the salon. The infinity pool was crowded the first day, a Sunday, but after that is was wonderfully vacant. The best part of the pool experience was the fact that other than on the first day there were no small children so it was fairly peaceful. The one drawback to the pool atmosphere was the dreadful music that was much too loud and annoying, not conducive to creating a truly relaxing environment..We did not eat in the restaurant but we did have room service twice and were pleased with the food and amazed that it arrived HOT, rather than the usual lukewarm you find from room service. Be sure to take in a Diamondbacks game if you are there in the summer, the stadium is incredible! The Sanctuary is a great place and I would love to return there again next summer, I do not hesitate to recommend it at all. I had a stress free four days and came home truly relaxed and rested.

“Loved our peaceful suite!”

We booked a mountain vista suite for one night to celebrate a birthday. It was one of the most peaceful and quiet places I've ever stayed. We didn't hear a sound while inside the suite. We had a beautiful view of the mountains and Paradise Valley below. The suite was 1000 sq. ft. with two balconies joined together. The bed was heavenly. There was a travertine shower but no tub - odd but ok with us. There was a flat screen tv in the living room area and one in the bedroom. There was a kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom, and bathroom. We didn't utilize the restaurant or bar but did use room service. They bring ice to the room twice a day and in the evening they have turn down service where they light the little tea candles and freshen things up. Their robes are big and comfy. Someone mentioned the green flip flops. Well, I thought they were practical - something you could wear to the pool vs. the normal slippers that you normally receive at a nice resort. The food was good and so was the service. This is not a resort for children although we saw a couple around 10. This is a place for couples to have a romantic getaway. You park very close to your suite. When you check in the valet escort you to the registration desk, give you a tour showing you the restaurant, bar, pool area, etc. Then he gets in a golf cart and you drive behind him to your suite. He'll help you with luggage and be sure you're comfortable in your suite answering all of your questions. I don't understand the previous bad reviews. There were no bad odors associated with the suite and the furniture did not look old or shabby. We had a lovely time and will go back again.

“Fabulously Relaxing”

My mom and I stayed at Sanctuary for two nights after I took the California Bar for a relaxing spa get away. We were not at all disappointed. I booked the entire stay with a reservations agent at the hotel. She was able to recommend me a package that was most suited to our needs and recommended her favorite spa treatments.

From the moment we arrived, we were waited on hand over fist. Everyone that we encountered on the property was extremely nice and greeted us by name and with a cold bottle of water. We stayed at a spa casita which was absolutely gorgeous. The spa was beautiful and relaxing, and all of the services that we got were top of the line. We got up early on sunday morning and did a sunrise yoga class which was very nicely done as well. I was also very pleased with the general atmosphere of the property. It was nice to not be on some behemoth property where you just felt like one of the crowd. Everything was so personalized and intimate.

And don't even get me started about the food at elements. We only planned to have dinner there one night, but had such a fabulous meal that we had to go back the second night. Not only was the food superb, but the cocktail menu was filled with new and interesting concoctions that just begged to be tried. We were never disappointed. We even had to ask the bar tender about the basil grapefruit cocktail so we could try to recreate it at home.

I cannot come up with a single negative thing to say about the time we spent at Sanctuary, and I cannot wait to go back!

My husband and I were married in May but with jobs and children a long honeymoon was out of the question. Looking on the internet I found this hotel and the pictures sold me on making reservations for three nights. We stayed in a mountain suite- which smelled very old upon opening the door. The furntiure and carpets were old and very dirty. The king sized bed was actually two singles somehow joined together. The bar was nice but overpriced as was the food in Elements. Service was slow, portions small and not very good.

Even though we had booked three nights we left the next day and spent the rest of our honeymoon at home.

“Very Nice, but Not Perfect”

Sanctuary Camelback Mountain

4 of 5 stars

After reading all of the TripAdvisor reviews, maybe my expectations for this hotel were too high. I think a 5 star rating is best reserved for truly memorable properties where location, service and amenities all come together.

We booked during the summer to take advantage of the deeply discounted rates. As such, we were able to book a Mountain Casita right before the 4th of July holiday for ~ $200 per night.

The room itself was quite nice, although you could tell it was an older, but nicely renovated space. Unfortunately, our room did not have a view of the mountain - only of the rooms across from us. The bathroom, with oversized tub was great and having the ability to get free dvd's from the front desk to watch on the flat screen tv was a nice touch.

The room was serviced several times a day. It was a nice surprise to come back to our room after dinner to find tea lights lit throughout....

The large infinity pool was nice, but a bit smaller than I had imagined after seeing the pictures. When we arrived on the first day, July 3, the pool was fairly quiet. Come Friday, July 4, the pool was very crowded. People kept eyeing other people's floating mattresses to grab one as soon as it became free.

The drink service at the pool was friendly and prompt. The drinks were good, but I don't recommend the Asian chicken salad. It was essentially sliced napa cabbage with a poached chicken breast (with the rubbery skin). Of all the things at the hotel, this was one of the biggest disappointments.

We had breakfast both mornings at Elements. The breakfast prices are fairly reasonable - especially comapred with other hotels in this price range. Portions were also quite large. Service was spotty - there were long periods where it seemed like all of the servers disappeared.

We had one dinner at Elements. Service may have been off because it was 4th of July and the restaurant was very busy. Our server was attentive at the beginning of the meal, but then we saw less and less of him as the night wore on. The portions of the appetizers varied greatly - the fried calamari dish was ample enough for 3-4 to share. But the tempura shrimp appetizer was one (1) shrimp - for $15! We didn't order it, but the people next to us were shocked when they received a plate with one shrimp.

The location of the resort was great - very close to downtown and Old Town Scottsdale.

Would we go back? Maybe. But I couldn't imagine paying high season rates of $400-$500 for the sam experience.

P.S. The "easier" of the two hikes on Camelback mountain is not "easy" by any means. We are fit, active people and it was somewhat challenging at times. I wouldn't recommend the hike for casual (flat) trail hikers.
