Design Suites stands out from most of the other properties in Calafate because it looks very new (we saw most of the others when we picked up passengers at their hotels for a tour and they looked distinctly older), and has a funky design. My wife and I were impressed with the quality of their rooms, the views, and the way their bathrooms were appointed. There are several negatives about the hotel, but I still think it's the best bang for the buck in the area.
For negatives, the rooms have an odd propensity to either be very hot or very cold. It's hard to achieve a normal temperature. They offer a space cooler, since most commonly the room is warm if you have the window closed (but gets very cold if you open the window). Also, if you do not speak spanish well, you may experience issues with the reception. A few times we had questions but could not communicate effectively with the staff. This hurt us in one instance as we did not understand whether the big ice tour provided lunch or we needed to bring it. The person behind the desk could not understand the question. We ended up buying one lunch for two people just in case. Well the Big Ice tour does not give you lunch it turns out, and we having to share the one lunch with another couple from the hotel that had the same problem.
Nonetheless, I would still recommend the hotel. For the money spent, and the other options available, it is the best selection in my opinion.
Some quick El Calafate tips. The big ice tour is amazing. However, if you are not in shape, I would not recommend doing this tour. It is really physically draining. I am pretty active (play sports a couple times a week, etc), and was exhausted by the end of the tour. If you are not looking for a super hike, the mini trek is likely more for you. You also get to walk on the glacier on this tour.
La Tablita was a great place for dinner, I would recommend reservations.
If you are flying back to BA, look into the direct flight to BA's local airport. Otherwise, you will travel twice the time on a flight that has a layover and ends up in the int'l airport.
