You have to be a little masochistic to enjoy this hotel, I suspect - but I really like it!
It's well located on Plaza San Martin at the start of Florida. It's a grand old hotel and the main dining room shows one what the hotel was like in its heyday in the 30s - the ancient fans are amazing! The hotel has atmosphere.
In an old hotel like this, rooms come in all shapes and sizes, with many suites. It's worth paying for one with Club access - breakfast there is worthwhile. If you go for room 690, you get a suite with your very own large grassed roof garden, and I think 686 has access to another section of roof garden.
The rooms are of variable quality. On one trip, I had water pouring through the ceiling after a storm - but was rapidly moved to a large, recently-redecorated suite as an upgrade. The bathrooms are fitted in old marble but some fittings are dated. I find the rooms and the beds very comfortable.
The main restaurant is excellent, and should be experienced once for the ambience alone. The secondary restaurant is less good but Buenos Aires has such splendid restaurants that you won't want to use it anyway.
Staff are - how shall I put this? - highly variable in quality. All the concierges are extremely knowledgeable and efficient, but they range from the friendly to the downright haughty. Front desk staff are pleasant and willing but get completely swamped when more than two people try to check in or out at the same time! Allow lots of time. Club staff are good.
I always enjoy the experience of staying here, but I hesitate to raise expectations too high because, with this hotel more than any other I know, enjoyment is very much a matter of one's own peculiar tastes! If you want a more familiar, reliable five-star service there are some good alternatives.
