“Decent place in Belize City”

We stayed at The Great House on our final night of an 8 day journey around Belize, and loved the feel of the place. It has old world charm, but modern conveniences. Belize City is not a destination in itself, but The Great House is a wonderful jumping off or ending point during a trip to Belize. A walk down to the lighthouse, out to the end of the pier, or through the adjoining neighborhood is interesting, but otherwise, there isn't much to do in the area. We did take a walking tour through the downtown area (a 10 minute walk away) that was written up in our guidebook. It gave us some insight to the culture of the area, but we could have done without the locals approaching and asking us to "Give me dollar!"

“Very nice way to end our trip”

The Great House

We stayed at the great house for the last night of our trip to Belize.
We stayed with our two boys(5 and 7) and had a great time. It is a very beautiful inn. Our room was very spacious, with two queen beds, large t.V, air conditioning(very quiet), and a spacious bathroom. The rooms are decorated all different and are gorgoeus. The inn is sort of connected to the Raddisson, which has a pool for all guests to use. The tourist village is a block and a half away, although you need to be there when the ships are in or there a virtually no stores open, don't know if we felt comfortable or not there because we saw more security guards than people. Right beside the great house there is a little bakery filled with lots of yummy tidbits, icecream, fruit and salad plates, and expresso(cheap)!!! The restaurant was good, we had only lunch there. There is the sea front wall and light house right down there street, a two minute walk. We enjoyed our one night at the Great house.

“Great House is Misnamed”

The Great House

After spending hours online trying to straighten out a mix-up in our reservation, we arrived at the Great House to find that they had given us a room that was set up for two and we had paid extra for a party of four. It was a tight fit and we could not even open the closet with the cot we needed in the room. We even had to ask for the two extra towels.

I woke up at 6:00 AM and had to go to the bathroom. I went into the bathroom where my son had forgotten to flush so I flushed. The entire bathroom then flooded with **** all over the bathroom floor.

I went out to the front desk (I was in desparate need of a bathroom) and there were no other bathrooms available to use. The people that worked in the restaurant were late to work and the downstairs bathrooms were locked and the front desk clerk had no key. With my pajamas on and barefoot, I ran across the street to the Radisson and used their restaurant bathroom.

Meanwhile, the front desk handed my husband a plunger so he could drain the toilet. The cleaning staff come in at 8:00 so HE CLEANED THE BATHROOM!!! This is now before 6:20 AM.

No one offered us anything and we checked out as soon as we could. I would say that this hotel is no where near the standards that are acceptable. The room was awful and they seemed totally unprepared for anything. I would not recommend staying here.

“Beautiful building”

We had a delicious meal at The Great House Restaurant. We sat outdoors by a fountain among lovely plantings. The staff was friendly and helpful, especially when we noticed that we had two different menus. They had a new printing. We suggested it might be less confusing if all people at the same table have the same menues. The service was great.

Upstairs we asked about tour services etc. from the hotel even though we were staying at the Radisson across the walk. The desk clerk was quite pleasant and gave us a map and some information because the tour desk was closed.

On a return trip, we would stay here. The building is beautiful in the old British colonial style. The picture that friends who stayed here took of their room was similar to that of The Great House website. We were reluctant to on this trip, because there was no listing at TripAdvisor.

The room was very nice, clean and comfortable. My only complaint was that the room wasn't ready when they said it would be so we had to sit downstairs in the bar for an hour to wait for it to be ready. It's a very nice, pleasant bar though, so it was ok :)
