reasonable rate for family of four (approx. $149) in a great location. Room was very comfortable and clean. In room internet was a little slow, but this was not our priority. Several convenient stores located near hotel for family snacks and quick meals ( CVS, subway, bread/bagel store). One week day there was a farmers market a few blocks from the hotel (maybe it was Thursday?) Great location, easy to walk to most sights.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this Courtyard Marriott. I stayed for a long weekend, arrived early morning. The very friendly staff managed an early check-in for me and stored my luggage until ready. I booked a double room and received one that faced the Spy Museum across the street...very comfortable and clean. 2-double beds, comfortable chair, workdesk w/ ergonomic chair and free internet, tv w/all the channels I like plus several sports channels. The bathroom was clean w/plenty towels.

Loved the fact that it was in an old bank building (small and cozy, which I like), so plenty of original trim and marble. The elevators required your room key in order to access your floor, which I liked because it restricted access. The cafe (which I believe serves only breakfast) was in the basement level was very comfy and nice...the breakfast buffet was ample w/selections and very good..eggs made to order, food very tasty and replenished regularly. The wait staff were very pleasant.

As a major tea drinker, one of my favorite amenities was the fact that I could select a variety of teas from a tea chest in the main level guest area, along with half-and-half and splenda, to take to my room and have tea whenever I wanted....I really enjoy my tea!

I thought the location was perfect....walking distance to major attractions (if you are a walker, which I am not), close to the metro and another transportation system called the 'dc circulator' (which I used for all 3 days there)....loved it! It is also in a very safe area...after hours, when the street and major pedestrian traffic slowed down, people were socializing at the outdoor cafes, walking their dogs, etc. Felt very safe.

Families stayed there, singles, couples, tourists....if you are looking for a high end business hotel, this one is not for you, otherwise, I think it is a gem.

Since I loved the location, the breakfast, the room rate, and especially the tea, I would not hesitate to stay there again and recommend it to others.

“Great location, small rooms”

Courtyard by Marriott Washington Convention Center

Our family stayed here in July. the location was great. close to the metros and in walking distance to most things. The staff was friendly and the hotel clean. The rooms however are very very small. we had a room with 2 double beds and there were four of us. There was very little space around the bed and the bathroom was even worse interms of space. The pool was very disappointing. There was mold along the walls of the pool and hot tub. After a long day of walking and sight seeing the hot tub sounded good but it was not something we wanted to get in to.

“great location”

We stayed at the Courtyard Washington Convention Center for 5 nights in mid-July. Overall, we were very happy with the hotel. The front desk and bell service were very helpful and friendly throughout the week. We arrived early in the day and although our room wasn't ready they willingly stored our luggage for the day so we could get out and see some sights. I requested a quiet room and they gave us a room that faced another building so there was no view but also no street noise. Once you see the size of all the buildings you will understand why there isn't much of a view anywhere except at the top of the Washington Monument.
The best thing about this hotel is the location coupled with the price. My number one priority when booking our hotel was the location. I wanted something within walking distance of some of the major sights, easy access to the metro and a variety of restaurant choices close by. The Courtyard met these requirements. It is right across the street from the Spy Museum and National Portrait Museum and an easy 1 block walk to the Gallery Place/China Town Yellow line metro stop. It is about a 7 block level walk to the White House just west on F Street (10+ min.) and about a 5 block walk South to the National Archives and Mall. We walked all over town from the hotel; to the Mall, the White House and the Capitol building. My husband had knee surgery recently and we were very worried about the strain on his knee but walking is easy in DC and you would miss so much if you cabbed it everywhere. We also used the Metro which is so easy to figure out. There is no need for a schedule because the trains run so frequently. We walked to the Lincoln monument one evening (a very long walk) and then cabbed it back to the hotel which was only about $11.
The down side of the Courtyard is the size of the rooms. We had our 16 year old with us for this trip and we were pretty tight in the rooms. We had a King bed and a pull out sofa, which was surprisingly comfortable. When the couch was pulled out there was only about two feet between the bed and the couch. The bathroom is very small. A seperate room for the bath and toilet but the sink area is a small single sink with very small counters. It was difficult to have three people get ready at once, probably terrible if there had been one more girl needing plugs and mirrors. You also can't be in the sink area without having the light shine in the face of the person sleeping on the couch bed.
Overall, I would recommend the Courtyard for people who want to be in Penn Quarter and are willing to trade the size of the room for location, free internet, and a nice clean hotel.
P.S. Don't forget to contact your Congressperson in advance for White House tours, Capitol Tour, and other special events.

“Good Hotel, Great Location”

Courtyard by Marriott Washington Convention Center

4 of 5 stars
New York City

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott DC Convention Center from July 18th to July 20th. We arrived at the hotel around 12:45 however since check-out is noon, there were no rooms available for us just yet since they were being cleaned. The front desk took our bags tho and told that that we'd be automatically checked in as soon as a room opened up. The staff at the front desk was very friendly.

We left the hotel to grab some lunch at Ella's wood fired pizza located at 901 F Street NW. We both really enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere there. The pizza and the staff there get a thumbs up from us. We then spent the rest of the day walking around, taking in the sights. The hotel is centrally located and within easy walking distance to all museums, the White House and the National Mall. We easily walked to Union Station and to the National Postage Museum. Chinatown was also an easy walk from the hotel.

We returned to the hotel at around 6:00PM and went to the front desk. We had been checked in and our room keys were waiting for us. We got our bags and headed up to the room. The hotel is very secure. The elevator won't work unless you insert your room key into a slot and press your floor number - if you try to press another floor, it won't work. When you're leaving the hotel, the elevator won't let you go to any floor but the lobby. Yes, my boyfriend and I tested the security of the hotel.

The room was very nice and well appointed. The only thing you must keep in mind is that the sink area of the bathroom is separate from the toilet and bath/shower. The toilet and shower are in one room and the sink area is right outside. There is a closet space located across from the sink area. We weren't aware that the set up was like this because it wasn't mentioned anywhere and we didn't recall reading it in any reviews so we figured we'd let people know ourselves. It wasn't a big deal but it was a bit inconvenient because we both like to have a lot of countertop space to put our toiletries. Also, they don't have glasses here, the hotel utilizes styrofoam and plastic cups. The bathroom had a weird configuration. The towel rack was above the toilet instead of anywhere near the shower. It would have been nice if the towel rack was closer to the shower like in most other hotels. Other than that, the bathroom and sink area were very clean.

The TV could use an update with a nice flat screen but it was fine. The room had a nice writing desk with swivel chair. There was also a nice cushy seat by the window. We had a nice view from our room of a restaurant across the street. The room had good light.

On the second day of our stay, the light bulb in the bathroom burnt out. We called the front desk and they sent someone to fix it ASAP. Also that day, we came back to the hotel around 6:00PM to rest before dinner. We received a really weird phone call and promptly called the front desk. They had transferred a call to our room but could not tell us who the person was or from what number they were calling from. It kind of freaked us out. Also, when we returned to the room, we noticed what appeared to be blood stains on the bed sheets. We called the front desk and were told that housekeeping would take care of it right away. When we returned later that night, all was fine.

As for places to eat, we recommend Wok n' Roll in Chinatown. In NY, wok n' roll is a gross Chinese fast food place located in most shopping malls. However, in DC, this wok n' roll was an actual restaurant with really good food and really good service. We both commented that we never thought we'd ever say the words "go eat at wok n' roll" but yes, when in DC, you can't go wrong there.

We also recommend a place in Chinatown called Eat First (or something like that). The place doesn't look like much from the outside but the food there was really good - not as good as wok n' roll though.

We also ate at Kanlaya which is a Thai restaurant. The food was good but the service was horrible. My boyfriend had finished off his glass of water and mine was less than half full. I asked a waiter if we could please have some more water and he told our waitress. She comes over, pours my bf water and then walks away. I guess she didn't think I needed to drink. Then during the meal she comes over and asks my bf if everything with the meal is okay and doesn't even acknowledge my existence. That really upset me. I believe that people in the service industry should be hospitable to everyone. I hate it when I go to restaurants and the waiters/waitresses aren't kind to everyone. I personally didn't enjoy my time there.

Word of caution. The museums in the National Mall are free. However, the food courts/cafeterias in the museums charge a $5 for a bottle of water. I don't recall the other prices of beverages but prices were well over $5. Carry your own drinks if you can.

Okay so overall, we would definitely recommend the Courtyard by Mariott DC Convention Center. It was close to everything you could possibly want to do and allowed us to walk everywhere. It's also very safe at night in the area. Oh and check-out was a breeze! Very nice staff at this hotel.
