“Free minibar in great hotel”

AC Avenida de America Hotel

3 of 5 stars
Cheshire
May 22, 2008

This hotel is in a great location, not far from the airport as well as being only a short taxi ride to the bars and restaurants.

The continental breakfast were quite basic and not very appitising so ate out after the first one.

It is a very modern looking hotel with great, clean rooms. A free minibar is good with extras down in reception to stock up on!!

Everywhere is a taxi-ride, but we expected that!

“Great hotel located near the Metro”

AC Avenida de America Hotel

Feb 19, 2008

I really like the location of this hotel. It is very convenient to the Metro which makes it a simple trip to and from the Airport. There are a couple of local Tapas Bars in the area that are quite good. If you want to play tourist it is an easy trip on the Metro to get to any area of Madrid. At 7,50 Euros for a 10 trip pass it is a great way to get around.

I like the AC properties because there is a standard across all of them that is good. It is nice to know what to expect when you use these properties.

There was one drawback this time. The AC properties in Spain have turned off their air conditioning for the winter. This makes the room very warm and stuffy. I had to open the windows - or door in this case, to make the room bearable at night. For this class of hotel, one would expect the air conditioning to remain available irregardless of the season.

“Great hotel if...”

AC Avenida de America Hotel

you don't mind staying a little bit north of the main sights in the city. It's worth booking if you're getting it at a much cheaper price than the city centre hotels.

We were a 5 minute bus ride from the shops in the Salamanca district and the downtown area around Cheuca, Retiro, Prado Museum (Bus No.1). There was a bus stop within a 2 minute walk in either direction out of the hotel.

We bought a metro/bus ticket which gave us 10 single rides for Euro 6.40 which was fantastic value (we preferred the buses to the metro).

As for the hotel...it was modern, clean, reasonably priced and in a decent enough neighbourhood (we were 2 girls travelling for a weekend away).

Reception staff were friendly and helpful. I'm not sure if it was a busy period for the hotel but we were never disturbed by other guests during the night (as we were the last time we stayed in another hotel in Madrid).

The room was a very good size - 2 lovely twin beds - even more comfortable than our beds at home! It was well decorated - lovely wood and glass decor.

Bathroom was clean and a good size. The minibar is free but we didn't really make much use of it. TV only had 1 English speaking channel (CNN news!) but we weren't in the hotel room much.

There is also a shuttle which can pick you up and drop you off from the airport - you have to book it beforehand with the hotel - which is a bit of a pain as they don't have any contact details on their website! We had to call a friend in Madrid to get the details and book it for us! However, the shuttle was waiting when we arrived and the driver was very friendly, chatty and showed us a bit of the sights along the way.

The only thing we didn't like was that the hotel did not provide an iron and ironing board - if you wanted something ironed, you had to use their laundry service, which of course will cost you! And the fact that the airport shuttle only operates Monday to Friday! The taxi fare on the sunday cost us Euro 22 for a 5-10 minute drive!

We didn't have breakfast or make use of the fitness suite.

There is a hotel just across the road from the AC Avenida which has a rooftop bar which has views over the city and is apparently worth a visit - but we didn't get a chance.

All in all - well worth booking if you don't mind not being in the centre of the sights.

“Nice hotel of good standard with extras you would not expect.”

The AC Avenida de America is a very nice three star plus hotel. The standard of decor, interior and service is a definite four star. Breakfast is fresh, simply prepared and with some cold meats, cheeses along with hot bacon, sausage and eggs Spanish style. There are also some delicious sweet cakes to have with coffee, such as Apple flan and really good brownies. As soon as breakfast is finished, the coffee bar is opened and fresh coffee, soft drinks, mini croissants and small sandwiches are available all day without charge. This is a very nice extra we have not experienced in any other city hotel. Also in the rooms free soft drinks and beer are provided in the mini bar which is nice. The bedrooms are very good, reasonable space, modern decor. Maybe some spring cleaning of soft furnishings is needed but not a big deal. The beds are really comfortable and with good pillows. Heat is more than adequate and adjustable. Twin rooms are recommended as they are slighly larger than doubles, apparently. The bathroom is very good, spotless and with nice fittings. An excellent shower with lashings of hot water, and nice little lotions, gels etc available. Location wise, this hotel is not in the tourist centre but is about two minutes walk from the metro station Cartegena, and the metro system is super and easy to use. 10 journey tickets are about €6 and can be used on metro and bus. A complementary shuttle service to and from the airport is provided Mon to Fri. I would recommend this hotel for their friendly and professional staff, nice fresh food, good beds and little extras, along with ease of access to the city centre.

“Very pleased in every way”

We arrived early morning from out flight from the states and planned to drop off our bags. The friendly staff gave us one of our rooms instead, a nice surprise at 9:30am. Rooms are very modern and clean, with hardwood floors, good closet space, great lighting. The bathroom is marble, with great pressure/hot water in shower. Lots of extras in case you forget something - razor, toothbrush, ect.
Most of the staff speaks some english, and were always very helpful. I received a key for a complementary safe deposit box. There is also a small frig in the room with complementary soda, water, and beer. From 11am to 7 pm there is a lounge downstairs with free coffee, cappucino, tea, soda, water, and rolls. A nice touch. The metra stop is about 2 blocks away, and there are small cafes and bakeries close by.
This is not in the busy areas, like Sol, but you are able to sleep at night. The beds are great, and the maid service is excellent. The TV has only 1 english channel CNN, but also has bloomberg for market news. We were very happy with our stay.
