“Not worth the rating”

A group on friends were going on a boat cruise in Lake Ontario and I suggested we try and book a few rooms downtown so there would be no rush to get home after the cruise.

I found the Intercontinental through Hotwire, they had it rated as a four and a half star hotel, I would call them a four star at best.

The hotel is in a great area, and although rather small in relation to most of the hotels in the neighborhood it was nice.

From the front it's a very unassuming place (I am in that area regularly and I've never noticed it) but once you walk into the lobby it is set up nicely.

Check in was quick (I had reserved a room for 4, and they tried offering me a room with 1 king size bed)(something that they tried with several members of our group.

The interior of the hotel is nice, but seems small.
Once we got to the room we thought it was nice (in my mind a four and a half star hotel should wow you, this was just an ok room)

A few things I noticed that enforced my belief in a lowered rating.
Toilet paper was cheap, seemed like 1 ply.
No fan in the bathroom
Small television (the room held 2 beds, and was quote large but there was only a '27 tv.
On button on television was stuck in the on position.
Cheap clock radio (most higher end places will provide more than a $5.00 model).

In all I don't have any real criticysms other than petty things that I thought made this less than a four and a half star hotel.

“Great hotel and staff!”

InterContinental Toronto Yorkville

Loved this hotel! We were upgraded to a junior suite - very comfortable. We booked the Royal Ontario Museum package that included a wonderful breakfast (we used room service) and parking as well as ROM tickets. This hotel is right across the street from ROM and in the heart of shopping and restaurants of Yorkville. A wonderful location. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. We liked everything!

“Just got back from a not so great experience”

InterContinental Toronto Yorkville

We decided on a last minute trip and called for availability. The least inexpensive room was a studio suite at approx $400 the first night and $284 the second. A bit more than we wanted to spend, but after reading the great reviews, figured what the heck!

I had requested an early checkin which was not guaranteed, but was assured the latest the room would be ready is 3 p.m. - we arrived at 3:45 pm and was told the room was not ready yet. The front desk gentleman was kind enough to upgrade us to an executive suite, but it only had a king bed rather than 2 queen. We figured we could manage and at least we could go clean up right away. Got into the room and thought it was very nice - until my 10 year old daughter found a condom on the couch. Thank goodness it hadn't been opened. The bathroom was also dirty.

Called down to the front desk and they asked us to hold on for a moment. The Manager got on the phone, apologized profusely and notified me we were being upgraded to the Penthouse Suite. Was thrilled with how accomodating this place was - so we met her at the elevator and proceeded up to the top floor. Although the room was okay, it was not what I envisioned for a penthouse suite that goes for $1600 a night- carpet was fraying all over, rooms looked outdated. Again, the bathroom was dirty, but this time I just cleaned the toilet myself. Then, I pulled the comforter back and found a blood stain on the sheet. Yuck! Called back down and of course, they sent housekeeping which changed only that sheet rather than remake the whole bed. The Manager did send us dessert and vouchers for breakfast - so again, very apologetic and tried to make things right.

Next day we went out fairly early and returned about 12 pm. Was surprised that the "service room" sign was gone and that housekeeping had come already. Walked in and found all of our breakfast plates and such still on the dining room table, but the bed had been made. Then the final straw - the housekeeper had must of been hungry because she ate some of our leftover breakfast. I could not believe it and decided I really did not want to stay any longer. We were granted our request to cancel our 2nd night without penaly, but will definitely not return to this hotel. Matter of fact, I don't think we will return to Toronto - not at all what we remembered from years gone by.

“Everything you'd expect from Intercontinental.”

InterContinental Toronto Yorkville

5 of 5 stars
Montreal, Canada
Aug 2, 2008

I don't have to say that the rooms were impeccable, quiet and spacious, they always are at any Intercontinental. The location is great, right in the heart of Yorkville, facing the Royal Ontario Museum, and with at least 40 bars and restaurants, as well as designers boutiques within walking distance. Service was great, with the only flat note being the $13 daily charge for internet. If you want a nice place for a drink, try Hemingway's for peiple watching, and walk 5 minutes to Sotto Sotto for a great italian meal.

“Excellent service (thank you Evan!) and good location”

InterContinental Toronto Yorkville

4 of 5 stars
Netherlands
Aug 2, 2008

We stayed for 6 nights at the Intercontinental Yorkville, Toronto and can really recommend this hotel. We stayed in a junior suite. The hotel is not very new and could use some little updating (no flat screen etc). The room and bathroom were large: bed comfortable. Though the lightning insufficient and old. That is our only minor point. And for being Europeans we believed the central fresh air system was very noisy and too cold (15 degrees Celsius). It was not possible to switch that off in your room.
However the service was excellent; staff very helpful and correct. Concierge Evan helped us organize all our trips and even booked our tickets for the Canadian football and cinema. The restaurants around the hotel are very good and we loved the location as it still has a little bit of the old town charm.
