We did an afternoon tour in the smaller boat - in advance I was somewhat dubious about whether it would be worth the price. Brett over-delivered - 4+ hours, 100 miles covered, approximately 30 or so whales. Absolutely great.
We saw some whales hunting seals they cornered on rocks; the whales breached a few times. We traveled all the way to off the coast of White Rock and saw 3 pods traveling. At one point Brett went well ahead of the whales, turned off the boat and we drifted as pods swam by us and we listened on the hydrophones which played on speakers in the boat. We had a sunny day and the water was perfectly still - no waves at all. The speed of the boat allows Eagle Tours to take you where the whales are - no matter how distant. By going in the afternoon there may be some advantage in that the various companies have reported on the location of the whales and they can go directly to them.
Practical matters - they supply fairly heavy jackets which double as lifejackets, they also supply windpants, tukes, sunscreen, some extra sunglasses and a couple pair of binoculars. We were sweating on the dock in the sun and when they handed out the jackets and then he offered the tukes, I thought who needs all that. Well, at 40+ knots, that wind gets pretty cold and everyone wanted jackets and tukes. Then when you drift watching the whales, you take everything off.
You should take: sweatshirt, sun hat, suntan lotion, sunglasses, binoculars, camera, water/drinks.
This tour is definitely good value for the price and enjoyable.
