“A decent hotel”

Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver

3 of 5 stars
England
Sep 21, 2008

Booked this through the sutton website, and by becoming members got a cheaper rate. We stayed in a one bedroom suite for 6 nights. The suite was a good size, with a decent kitchen, and the biggest TV you have ever seen!! The hotel has probably one the best locations in downtown, in that it is right on robson street, and a very easy walk everywhere, plus there is a supermarket right next door, bus stops right outside and the vancouver trolly company also stops right over the road (though I wouldn't rate them very highly, quite often we waited easily 30-45 mins!). The swimming pool is a good size and never really busy, and there is a nice deck with ping pong. The staff were very helpful, and offered all sorts of advice about what to see and do (also told us that the museum of anthropology is closed until next march, which saved us trecking down to the university), and booked things for us - they also give money off coupons, which is very handy! Overall a very pleasant stay in this hotel.

“Great stay”

Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver

5 of 5 stars
Manchester, England
Sep 18, 2008

I was a little nervous before our stay due to some of the less that complimentary reviews on the website but from the second we arrived we loved the Sutton Place.

The hotel’s biggest asset is undoubtedly the staff, who are all friendly, helpful and efficient at all levels – from the front desk staff to the concierge to housekeeping. In particular a mention to the ladies and gent in the Gerard bar, who provide excellent discreet service and have great memories – we visited on Saturday and then again late on Monday night and they remembered that I have mayonnaise with my fries and my husband likes malt vinegar. It really is the little touches like this that make the difference.

Another example of good service and what I can only describe as “a little bit of thought” came on leaving the hotel. We had a late flight and I wanted to get changed after a days touring and shopping. Upon realising this was what I wanted to do the gentleman who brought our bags out of storage ushered me to the front desk where I was given a key card for the spa, where I was able to have a shower as well as get changed. This was a very welcome gesture – I have simply been pointed at rest rooms in the past.

Given that we got a good rate on the hotel website I was expecting a “room with issues”, but we had a great room on the 14th floor with pretty much floor to ceiling windows, with views of the city. There was very little traffic noise despite the location on Burrard Street. The room was immaculately clean and nicely decorated.

The hotel is well located – right by Robson Street and a few minutes walk from the waterfront.

A final mention to the bakery next door which serves great coffee and top notch pastries.

All in all, a great stay.

“Sleepless in Vancouver”

Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver

My wife and I made a prepaid reservation at the Sutton Place for 3 nights starting August 19, 2008, before we left on a cruise in the Inside Passage. We had booked a reservation months before our trip and had prepaid for our stay with a request that the hotel hold our rooms for late arrival as we planned to arrive around 10 pm on the first night. Our flight was delayed and when we arrived at midnight, the doorman said,
"I hope you have a reservation because we are sold out." The desk clerk told us we had no room and we would have to take a taxi and use another hotel. They gave us a voucher for the taxi, another room and breakfast for 3 days. They promised to refund the first night's charges, but we never received the refund. We were upgraded to a suite, but we had to change hotels and when we attempted to check in at noon the second day, we were told to come back later.

The taxi driver who took us to the other hotel said he had done the same for another guest an hour earlier.

It's obvious that the Sutton place overbooks its rooms even for prepaid guests. While the rooms are nice, their reservations are a disaster. While they attempted to make up for their mistake, we lost almost a day changing hotels.

My advice if you insist on staying at the Sutton Place, to either make sure you arrive in the afternoon, after check in or stay at the Sheraton up the street. Arriving at midnight to find your room has been given away shows an indifference to customers that is beyond contempt.
