This was our second visit to the Riu Cancun so we knew exactly what to expect, and certainly weren't disappointed.
We were in Cancun from 4th September to the 18th September.
Check In
On arrival we were taken to a room and told about the facilities in the hotel and how things worked, at that point we were handed our keys and let up to our rooms. Having been before we knew what we were being told, but it's a great start for people who are new to the resort and the hotel.
Rooms.
All the rooms have air-con which is heavenly after a day on the beach. All the rooms also have a view of the ocean, but one side of the hotel is better than the other (this year we contacted the hotel before flying out and requested the side with a view of the pool area).
The maids keep the room extremely tidy and we couldn't fault their hard work. They even make animals out of your hand towels and leave them in your room for you!
Food.
The food is fantastic. They run a 7 day cycle of different cuisines, not every night was to my tatse but I could always find something to eat. On top of that, they have 2 restaurants, one Brazillian which was very very nice and a lot of meat to eat! The second and by far our favourite is the Japanese. You cannot fault the waiting staff in this restaurant, they refill your drinks before you have finished your last one.
My fiancee is vegetarian and although both the Brazillian and Japanese have set menu's they were more than accomodating in making something that was suitable for her to eat and she says that it was some of the best food she's eaten for the holiday.
Bar service.
Again I cannot fault the bar-staff or the waiters, they bend over backwards to make sure you have everything you need. The sports bar can get a little rowdy at times, but I wouldn't expect anything less of a bar that shows sports and serves alcohol 24/7!
Entertainment
The Animacion team are outstanding!! All of them work very long hours and are always willing to help you out. If you want a night out then the entertainers take you out to different bars in Cancun every night and make sure the drinks keep coming.
All of the entertainers are excellent, but special mention must go to Alessandro (the "Muy Bien, Very Good" man!), Lalo (who puts on the funniest English accent) and most of all, Winnie who is utterly amazing with his water sports, dancing and general tom-foolery, he absolutely made our holiday!
Nightlife.
There are lots of bars and clubs to try in Cancun whether you like or dislike them will be down to personal taste. One you must try as everyone says is Coco Bongos.
Most clubs operate a fee to get in and free drink once inside which is fine if you know what the place is like, but not so fine if you haven't been there before.
Also, if you are planning on going to a club different to one that the entertainers are doing, I would suggest speaking to one of them and seeing if they can help you out with getting tickets. Most of the sellers on the street charge you more than you would pay on the door to the club, and the entertainers know most of the door staff at the clubs so may be able to help you out with express entry.
Excursions
All of the excursions we did we loved. There were plenty of others we didn't do but would still haved loved to go on.
My highlight was the Jungle Tour where you get to drive speedboats around the lagoon and go snorkelling off a coral reef, while we were in the water we saw a baby shark!
The pirate cruise is always good fun, we knew what to expect this year so took pirate costumes and really got into the mood of things!
Dolphin Discovery is a must for any dolphin lovers, this was my Fiancee's highlight of the trips.
Ok, thats all the good stuff, now for the downsides.
Thomson Rep.
Ok this isn't the fault of the hotel, but our Thomson rep was hardly ever at the hotel. He had set times each day that he was supposed to be at the hotel, but quite often we'd go to see him and find signs saying he wouldn't be there today. There were other days when we he just wasn't there.
Lifts.
These for me were the worst part of the holiday. A 5-star hotel could surely invest in some air-conditioned lifts that don't break down! If you are on a lower floor you probably won't mind the lifts too much, but after 2 weeks on floor 14 (out of 15) and having to stop at every floor on the way down in sweltering heat it really got to me.
Swim-up Pool Bar
Again this isn't a direct fault of the Riu, but there were days when it was full of people (mainly Americans I think) who did nothing but drink from 9am until mid afternoon (without getting out for toilet breaks). The drinking would eventually stop when they either threw up (normally in the pool) or had to be dragged out because they passed out). I remember one day when we watched about 5 people get wheeled off in wheelchairs in the space of about an hour because they were too drunk. I think maybe the hotel bar staff should be able to refuse to serve people drink if they think they are too drunk.
Summary.
The downsides to the two weeks are certainly outweighed by all the positives. We came to the Riu Cancun for the first time last year and loved it that much we booked again for this year. Next year we are on honeymoon and want to go somewhere different, but the following year we will definately be back.
