I won't write an essay, just a list of good and bad points...
Good points:-
Staff were all friendly - with the exception of one barman at the beach bar .
Bad points:-
We were in a group of 10 people and so wanted a few sunbeds next to each other by the pool - (we didn't want 10, as the kids and myself were hardly ever out of the water, the most we wanted was 6 at any time). To be sure of getting these, one of us had to be out there by 6 a.m. to put towels on the beds, and even at that time most beds were already taken.
3 of the kids cut themselves in the pool over the course of the holiday. When I finally put on a mask and snorkel to have a look in the pool, I could have made a list of problems/defects a mile long. The pool needs major work doing to make it safe
The buffet restaurant was constantly running out of items of food and people had to wait quite a while for trays to be replenished, often having to ask several times.
At breakfast, there were always trays out offering the previous nights leftovers. - For example, who would seriously want pork or beef stew for breakfast - warmed up from the night before?
In the restaurants (reservation required), we were told several times that we could not have a table for 10 as it was too many people for 1 waiter - even after making this request clear at time of booking. Sometimes we were accomodated, but not always.
Drinks in the lobby bar were often in squashy plastic glasses - even the cocktails, which also came without any decoration.
Problems in the room included a toilet with broken flush which I fixed myself,a glass shower door which was grinding on the tiles and seemed in danger of breaking at any moment; Broken air con unit which took 2 days to repair and a broken light on the balcony.
The Barcelo Hotels book in the room describes the hotel beach as world class and one of the finest beaches in the Caribean...
That's a laugh. The beach is man-made and is full of little bits of pebble sized concrete lumps. The stools at the beach bar are rooted in concrete which is badly damaged/broken. An accident waiting to happen. Same problem with sun beds as by the pool.
Swimming in the ocean is only allowed within a very small buoyed area, as the hotel beach is right next to an inlet used by countless numbers of boats every day. In fact, I don't recall seeing anyone actually swimming there, and apart from myself and my 3 children, who love to snorkel, I probably saw about 5 others snorkelling over the 2 weeks that I was there...
I could continue - there's much more, but I think you'll get the picture from what's here... I wouldn't go there a second time. If I visited Cancun again, I'd definitely pay a couple of hundred quid extra per person and stay at a much better hotel.
