Where to start…..
We had booked this trip with 58 weeks to go, a large party of 18, I have been reading the reviews for a long time.
We made exactly the right choice for our party.
Welcomed with Cold Towels and were checked in so quickly half of us missed the cookies they brought out.
Yes this is an older hotel, and it does show in some areas, particularly the rooms, but the rooms were very clean, with plenty of room for my husband and I and our son, plenty of wardrobe space, but take a few extra hangers along if you want to hang everything. We were in an Ocean Front Room, that we had paid for, our friends ended up with Ocean Front and Dolphin Views that they hadn’t asked to upgrade to! Other friends were not happy with the view, and they were switched the next day, no problems.
The rooms were perfectly fine, not opulent or luxurious, but suitable for what we wanted and were pleasant to spend time in.
On arrival we had a problem with the lock on the balcony door, this was fixed literally within minutes. We also had no robes, again, we asked nicely and got them the next day.
Maid service was good and thorough, we did miss it once, but I think it was because we were in the room when they wanted to come in and they never got back to us.
So for us, the accommodation was good, and any problems we did encounter were sorted out quickly and efficiently. Top Marks.
Pool, again often complained about as being too small. It was smaller than some, but not as small as others. It was big enough for the number of guests and only really got a bit busy during activities such as aqua aerobics or volleyball. The swim up bar was great, as was the service there.
In all bars, premium brands were available, you simply had to ask, the only thing I couldn’t get was Irish Whiskey, (which is probably a good thing!).
As an early riser, the sunbed game dosent really bother me. Around the pool was the busiest area, Some mornings there were seats available all day, other days were very busy and there wasn’t a sunbed to be had around the pool by 9.00am. The staff were good though, they would find beds for you and also parasols and move them to where you needed them. (The parasols are really heavy don’t try and move them on your own!), around the lagoon and on the beaches there were plenty of chairs available all day.
Also as an early riser, I was very pleased to find take away coffee available at World Café from 6.30am, the bars don’t open until 10.00am around the pool, although the waiters come around with trays full of bottled water from approx 9.00am. I would just take a couple of bottles of water from the mini bar with me in the mornings.
Our first couple of days were spent with Tropical Storm Dolly, the wind and rain came in around noon on our first day, the staff were very busy clearing away the sunbeds, bins anything that wasn’t permanent. They provide a rainy day activity program if that’s your thing but we went out shopping and bowling. The hotel left us a note to explain what was happening and were good at keeping us updated. The kids carried on playing in the pool and Jacuzzi through most of it except the very worst of the lightening.
The restaurants were good, World Café was excellent for breakfast, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs was my favourite, also omlettes, fried eggs, juices and smoothies, usual bacon sausages, pancakes and pastries, and the good old Mexican favourite refried beans. Can’t quite handle them for breakfast. You could also get foil and take away boxes at World Café if you were going out for the day, this was really handy.
Seaside Grill, we only had lunch as we had kids and it is adult only in the evening. The lunch was very good.
Himitsu was excellent, the sushi was freshly made to order and the other dishes were all really good. Now the night we ate here was the first time we really saw any mosquitoes. After the storm it had remained quite breezy and this was the first night that there was no wind. They all seemed to come out of the bushes with their napkins on. The hotel was great and provided insect repellent spray for the guests and came over and asked if you needed any. A great response to a problem out of their control.
Oceana, Had some really nice meals in here, not really a big fish eater, but enjoyed the Tuna and the steak, had a shrimp and fish tournado thingy which was presented beautifully, it was nice but a bit fishy for my taste. Had fantastic Crème Brulee, which I don’t even like usually.
Paloma Bonita, this is the Mexican restaurant outside the resort, Dreams guests get 20% discount. Get your voucher off the Bell boy before you go.
We had a wonderful night here, the service was lovely and we allowed the waiter to select our starters for us. They made a great effort with the kids and we all really enjoyed it.
Lobby bar could sometimes get a little stuffy in the evenings, we preferred to sit on the terrace but there are only a few seats, could have done with more. Our favourite bar was the “swing” bar right by the beach.
Food and drinks service around the pool was fantastic, I didn’t even order a drink sometimes, the waiter would just bring me a Corona and a water without asking, of course it would be rude not to drink it! Cocktails were good, there wasn’t an official cocktail list, you got the cocktail of the day on the sundial (daily newsletter), and the rest was a case of I’ll try what hes having. Mudslides were my favourite, just tasted like chocolate milkshake. They also did non alcoholic versions for the kids. They offered a limited menu of club sandwiches, burgers or hotdogs around the pool, which were fine if you couldn’t be bothered getting up and going to one of the restaurants, sometimes they also set up something on the lagoon beach, like a BBQ or Paella.
We tipped often because we appreciated the hard work and the good nature of the staff. We were never made to feel as though we were expected to.
We did have some problems with the room keys, which were again attended to quickly and efficiently.
Location is excellent, easy walking distance to various distractions, also easy for getting taxis as there is a rank right next to the hotel.
Didn’t try Azucar as we had the kids.
Explorers Club was great for the kids. As my son is a little older you could sign him in on a come and go option which was great. He could go and join in the football or tennis for example when he felt like it and when there wasn’t anything happening he fancied he would come back to us at the pool.
Security staff were friendly, and were quick to subdue any noisy or disruptive guests, again out of the hotels control, but an issue that has been mentioned before, we couldn’t fault them in this area.
Entertainment team were exceptionally good. We didn’t really use any of their services, but they would come around and talk to you each day, let you know what was happening, ask if you wanted to get involved, if you didn’t then no worries, no pressure at all. Some of our party went to clubs with them and would really recommend this rather than going on your own.
The hotel is more compact that it appears on the maps, we found it ideal to sit by the pool, the kids could go to the pool / ping pong room, football pitch, swimming pool, lagoon beach, Jacuzzi, bungee and explorers club and they were all within shouting distance you only needed to go with them if they wanted to go to the beach to do some kayaking or go on the pyramid.
This hotel is not the Ritz. It is an older property, but it has a lovely warm atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed, the staff are wonderful and work really hard.
If you go to this hotel bearing this in mind you will not be disappointed.
If I haven’t covered something you wanted to know, drop me a pm.
