First, the great things about Grand Mayan:
1) There is horseback riding on the beach, which is a fantastic experience! The sand is soft, so the ride is smooth. If you are a good rider, you can run a good stretch down the beach. When we were there (in Oct) the beach was nearly empty. $25 for an hour is a super deal.
2) There is a sea turtle sanctuary right on the beach. If you have never seen sea turtle hatchlings, it is wonderful to see these ancient, endangered animals up close. About one hundred hatchlings come out of each nest each morning at the sanctuary, and they release the hatchlings in the middle of the night. (note: don’t believe them when they tell you what time they will be released. We went every night but always missed them)
3) The facility and views are amazing. The beach is peaceful.
4) The room service pizza was delicious, as was the fondue at Mondo. The smoothies at the golf course are also good.

Frustrating things:
1) The chairs scrape loudly against the tile floors when housecleaning moves furniture in adjoining rooms, bombarding guests with horrible screeching noises and banging. We were unable to sleep in or take a nap the entire week because of the noise level. Also, one morning at 3 am the employees polished the hall floors with a very loud machine, depriving us of sleep.
2) In Oct, the train wasn’t running and it was difficult to find food after 6pm. The breakfast buffet was good but cost $20. The pools are great, though a little cold. The water park is a lot of fun. However, if you are an RCI (or other) guest and not a member of the Mayan group, you have to pay to enjoy the water park and there is a hefty fee if you turn in your towels late or lose your towel card.

I booked the Mayan Palace thru RCI and when we ( my iwfe and another couple) arrived we were offered an upgrade to the Grand Mayan. ( if we agreed to a time share presentation) we did and the Grand Mayan is a lovely site. We got the golf course view, but when you come up in the elevator you get a great view of the Pacific! THe grounds are fantastic and very well tended. Out driver Angel, took us to Walmart to buy booze and some food. I am not cheap, but the drinks at the resort are pricey and the food while decent is overpriced. We had sushi at Mondo in the resort, which is quite good. We got room service a few times, but mostly ate off the property. BArra Vieja is about 10 miles away and has a great seafood resatuarant called Esmirna del Mar. Grat snapper a la talla and octopus! Plus a table right on the beach! WE walked the beach everyday and there are vendors, but they are not too obnoxious. If you are a golfer, there is a great Greg Norman course there. The pools are very clean and there is a waterpark for the kiddies. The gym is nice, but if you arent an owner it is 80 dollars for a 5 days membership! I did get a complimentary massage, which was so-so. We watched monday nite football in Mondo which had a 2 for 1 beer special. There is a game room and a cyber cafe as well. It is about 15 dollars to go to downtown Acapulco. but it is worth it to take a look at La Condesa beach. Good deals on drinks downtown at places like Bambu and Barbarosa. I enjoyed the Grand Mayan, but they do hard sell the timeshare and there are a lot of rules. Plus it is a long way from downtown if you are looking from more activity. Its a good place to relax.

We booked our trip through RCI and every expectation was exceeded. We went during the rainy season we were told it only rained at night and they were right. During the day it was sunny and trust me we got sunburned a little. The hotel was not crowed, service was excellent on every level e.g front desk, housekeeping, food service, pool activities, bartenders etc. The room was very clean and they provide maid service daily unlike some RCI properties. We had the two bedroom suite and the splash pool on the patio. Everyone in previous emails mentioned Wal-mart, I don't go to Wal-mart in the states so I was not going to one in Mexico. There was a free shuttle that took us to a local market and we bought the necessities such as coffee, tequila and a few snacks. We were in Mexico and were not going to spend a lot of time drinking or eating in our room when we could go down to the great pool and get two for one Margaritas all day. They also have a bar we closed down almost nightly. We did not post too many photos of the hotel - you can see those from the other reviews. I just wanted to show you what a great time you have at the property and in the city.

Then there is Roberto that everyone raves about in all the reviews. And they were right again you won't be disappointed if you hire him. He speaks great English, gave us a complete tour of the city including the cliff divers, silver stores and a great Mexican restaurant in the hood. Which is just what we wanted. Partly the reason we think everyone has such a GREAT TIME with Roberto is other than he is really a nice guy - is the fact when he picks you up, he has this giant bottle of Tequila - and of course we all have a couple of shots before and during the tour.

Another evening he picked up again and took us to a restaurant called Linda Vista. it was like magic, we had the perfect table (the four of us) right at the edge overlooking the view of the entire bay. The food was excellent (try the Red Snapper) and it was table side service. Plus the servers are very entertaining.

My husband played golf 3 times at the Grand Mayan course - nice course, well maintained and they have a great club house. They also have a state of the art work out facility and spa. Wonderful!!

Overall I recommend staying at the Grand Mayan resort it is beautiful and the people are very friendly.

The Grand Mayan is a beautiful resort. It has everything you need to have a enjoyable vacation. We had the grand master suite which was huge but the rooms had a musty and mold smell that came from using the air conditioner. I have never been at a resort that clean and worked to keep everything so beautiful. Even though they cleaned our room thoroughly everyday it still had the mold smell.
Our Acapulco visit was terrible. We rented a car and every time we went into the city we were stopped and harrassed by the police who were trying to get us to give them money. Thank the good lord a vendor on the beach warned us and told us what to do if we were stopped. Never follow them or give them money, just have them give you a ticket. If they take your driver's license, don't worry and get one when you are back in the states. Also, when you ask for their name and badge number they will let you go. We love to rent a car when we travel so we can visit the sites at our leisure but that was a mistake in Mexico. Our stomachs stayed in knots everytime we went out in the car. It stopped us from getting out at night so if you go to Acapulco be sure to take taxis everywhere.
Also, you really need to speak some spanish or you will be totally lost as we were.
