Grand Mayan Acapulco

The Grand Mayan is a beautiful resort. It has everything you need to have a enjoyable vacation. We had the grand master suite which was huge but the rooms had a musty and mold smell that came from using the air conditioner. I have never been at a resort that clean and worked to keep everything so beautiful. Even though they cleaned our room thoroughly everyday it still had the mold smell.
Our Acapulco visit was terrible. We rented a car and every time we went into the city we were stopped and harrassed by the police who were trying to get us to give them money. Thank the good lord a vendor on the beach warned us and told us what to do if we were stopped. Never follow them or give them money, just have them give you a ticket. If they take your driver's license, don't worry and get one when you are back in the states. Also, when you ask for their name and badge number they will let you go. We love to rent a car when we travel so we can visit the sites at our leisure but that was a mistake in Mexico. Our stomachs stayed in knots everytime we went out in the car. It stopped us from getting out at night so if you go to Acapulco be sure to take taxis everywhere.
Also, you really need to speak some spanish or you will be totally lost as we were.

We stayed at the Grand Mayan 9/19/2008 - 9/25/2008. The hotel is magnificent. The rooms are spotless and the grounds are perfect. We enjoyed the twice daily room service. My only complaint is that we asked for an ocean view room and were told we could move to another room in 3 days but no one ever contacted us again about it. The ocean was surprisingly calm for the Pacific. The beach is great for walking , jogging or boogy boarding. Not good for snorkeling. There were plenty of cabanas and lounges. We had a grand suite which included a kitchen. Bring a small egg pan from home. The cost of the meals are comparable to Disney World prices so go to the Wal-Mart and stock up. The drinks are $7.50 US dollars each. The drink of the day is 2 for 1 and also happy hour is 2 for 1. Bakal Restaurant was closed until November due to off season. Also part of the pool was closed for maintanence. The pool snack bars are great. Our favorite restaurant was the Italian Restaurant located about a mile away by free shuttle. We ate there 2 times. Cafe de Lago in the main building was OK for breakfast (a la carte) but we were disappointed with dinner. The hotel is about 4 miles from the airport and about 40 minutes from Acapulco. Roberto Alarcon was our tour guide and friend for the week. He picked up at the airport and took us to Wal-Mart. He provided us with a great city tour which included lunch at the Cliff Divers . He was very patient with our shopping. He acted as our photographer and took some great pictures. He arranged for a fishing trip for my husband, sorry to report no fish were caught that day. He also took us back to the airport. I would recommend him highly. His email is robertoalrey@yahoo.com.mx. Good luck with your trip.

“Great Views and Great Service”

Grand Mayan Acapulco

5 of 5 stars
Santa Monica, CA
Sep 22, 2008

My wife and I stayed at the Grand Mayan, Acapulco for our honeymoon in August 2008. The Grand Mayan is one of the nicest hotels in Acapulco according to pretty much every website out there as well as every taxi driver we struck up a conversation with. Speaking of taxi drivers, Roberto Alarcon and his brother are by FAR the best taxi service in town. Roberto speaks perfect fluent English (used to live in So-Cal for a bit), is always available, has a large, clean and safe suburban with AC and leather. Without Roberto our trip would have been a shadow of what it ended up being. Here is is contact info, call or email before you come!!

The resort is setup primarily as a timeshare property, our room was a large and airy 1BR with a full kitchen, den, bedroom w/ jacuzzi, full bathroom with double sinks and large shower. There is also a small unheated plunge pool on the porch that was great for dunking in to start the day or rinse off the beach from the afternoon.

Service was amazing from the minute we arrived to the minute we left. My baggage got lost by air Mexicana on the way down, but the folks at the Grand Mayan were kind enough to phone us when it arrived and promptly brought up to the door.

We enjoyed room service several times. Food was above average, but nothing to get overly excited about. We discovered that the restaurants on site are all buffet oriented, and we didn't want to pay $17 a plate when we were only going to eat a little bit. The room service menu had lots of ala carte options, and the price was pretty standard American rates.

Happy hour at the on site bar proved to be a favorite. We visited from 7-8pm for half price cocktails and managed to meet a couple of other young couples that were on vacation.

A word of note - August/September is rainy season in Acapulco, so if you are considering planning a vacation you should shoot for December onward. We had a couple nights of crazy thunderstorms, lightning and rain. Strangely it always blew over in the night and we would awake to clear skies and warm humid days.

Over all a great experience. We normally lean toward smaller more quaint places, but we utilized our timeshare property this time around and were not disappointed. I highly recommend the Grand Mayan if you are planning a trip to the area, especially if you have a family!

Grand Mayan Acapulco

My family stayed at the Grand Mayan through a RCI trade. We did not have the ocean view, but that was fine. My husband and I traveled with a 3 and 4 year old. I was concerned about traveling with children so young, but we did not have any problems. The Mexico City is extremely confusing. I would avoid it if possible. Once we arrived in Acapulco we were greeted by Roberto. It was nice to have a friendly face at the airport. He took us to Walmart and gave us an excellent tour of Acapulco. Check in and out were quick and easy. We were never bothered by the resort at any time to do a time share "tour". We did have to pay to use the waterpark since we were not Grand Mayan members, but it was worth every penny. The children loved it. The prices were no different than any other decent resort. Other Americans guests were very friendly. The beach sand was clean and perfect and the beach vendors left us alone with a simple no thank you. We had an excellent, simple family vacation.

“Loved the Grand Mayan”

I just returned from a week long trip to Acapulco and my stay at the Grand Mayan was excellent. When walking to the reception desk at the Grand I was awestruck at the beauty of the ocean...it is enough to take your breath away. There were a total of 4 ladies in our group and we had the pleasure of staying in the Grand Master Suite which consisted of 2 bedrooms with a jacuzzi in each room, living, dining area and kitchen. It also contained two balconies and a dipping pool. The only complaint I would have is that the beds and pillows are too hard and the establishment needs to invest monies into providing better sleeping accomodations, and I would recommend avoiding the presentations. They claim they are only going to be 90 minutes but ours lasted at least 4 hrs. The highlight of the trip was my driver Roberto Alarcon. Roberto was funny, informative and told us all the right places to see. You can't beat his prices for personalized service. He took our group on a city tour where we saw the Chapel of Peace, Clift Divers, lagoon tour and other sites. He also recommended several restaurants and my sister and I ate at Su Casa a beautiful restaurant overlooking the city. Also on the lagoon tour we ate at an authentic Mexican restaurant located right along the ocean and the shrimp was the best I've ever eaten. When I left Acapulco I felt Roberto had become more than my driver but a friend. If you would like Roberto's contact information you can email me at www.justonmari@yahoo.com.
